La Liga Match Preview
Espanyol v Levante

What Transfer window….?
Week 22 in La Liga and after the very enjoyable Copa Del Rey action witnessed midweek it is a return to La Liga action. The midweek also saw the winter transfer deadline arrive however with the exception of Malaga’s Nacho Monreal’s €8.8m move to Arsenal and Real Madrid’s emergency signing of goalkeeper Diego Lopez nothing really shook up the Spanish press enough to avoid headlining on David Beckham’s shirt selling move to PSG. One move that went under the radar, and not because he’s just five feet in height, was Diego Bounanottes €2.3m move to Granada. Buonanotte has the skills to unlock any defence and will be the deciding difference in Granada surviving in La Liga this season.
Whilst FC Barcelona & Real Madrid look like having very winnable games this weekend and with Atletico Madrid in for a very tough game against Betis, especially after their energy sapping Cup game v Sevilla last Thursday, it is time to drop down the table and review a game involving some of the lesser known members of La Liga.
Upturn….
Valencia based Levante pay a visit to Barcelona to take on Espanyol at their relatively newly built home the Estadio Cornella-El Prat,in what should be a feisty affair. Espanyol sit fifteenth, seven places below their visitors, and will view this as good opportunity to pick up three points and climb further away from the relegation zone. The Parakeets had a most dreadful start to this season winning only twice from their first sixteen games. Coach Javier Aguirre took the reins in November last and his employment has been well vindicated with a dramatic improvement in results. The Mexican hard man gaffer has had only one loss in his first eight games in charge and that was to be expected away to FC Barcelona and to boost morale even more he managed to secure his team a draw away to Real Madrid scoring two goals in the process. El Vasco has a wealth of experience having managed at Atletico Madrid, Zaragoza & the Mexican national team on two occasions and it has certainly been on show these past few weeks.
Downturn….
While Espanyol are enjoying an upturn in fortunes their visitors are seemingly going in the opposite direction. The Frogs do come in to this game off the back of a two one win at home to Valladolid but this does not tell the hole story as Valladolid had most of the possession only to be unluckily foiled by an injury time own goal. Previous to this Levante lost three on the spin away (one cup game) and could not muster one goal. A long season is been had by the Levante squad with a decent run in the Copa Del Rey and continued participation in the Europa League beginning to show on the frog’s legs. Coach Juan Ignacio Martinez is to be credited highly for what he has achieved with this Levante squad but fighting on three fronts since the season’s beginning is proving a bridge too far and something has to give. The current high position held by Martinez’s men in La Liga along with next week’s home tie against Malaga followed by a European home tie to Olympiakos has them in a bit of a comfort zone and an away game to Espanyol may not be at the top of the importance list down at the Levante training ground.
U-Turn….
For any one that is experienced in betting OR bookmaking You will be well aware that when you are on a good run then everything falls your way and when on a bad run you can’t buy a winner(or dinner!). In studying the recent form of both these teams it has reminded me of the above statement and it strikes me that Javier Aguirre is the man blowing hot and Martinez is cold. After I tipped up a loser last week, I am siding with the Mexican man in form to get me back to winning ways….
