La Liga Match Preview
Real Betis v Malaga CF

Spanish Armada..battered..but not sunk.!
La Liga’s European representatives have been shown in poor light this past two weeks and in the Champion’s league Malaga, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are going to have to step it up a gear are three to get into the next round. All is not lost though as I feel coach of Malaga Pellegrini had his dour tactics spot on and was unlucky that they conceded an offside goal and will be very relaxed about chasing a one goal deficit against a team of similar standard at La Rosaleda. Real Madrid go to Old Trafford and I really do expect them to score as Madrid born Man United cat David De Gea surely can’t play as inspired again for another ninety minutes. FC Barcelona probably have the most difficult task of tuning over a two goal deficit against a decent Italian side but if any team can do it then the ‘Blaugrana’ can. It is hard to gauge an opinion of AC Milan’s two nil win as the Sky Sports cameraman spent about ten minutes pointing his camera at the pitch and the other eighty pointing at the Mario Balotelli and his entourage in the crowd..WHY ALWAYS HIM.

In the Europa League by playing mostly fringe players Diego Simeone relinquished Atletico Madrid’s Europa title in favour of concentrating on securing Champion’s League football next season for his charges and that leaves only Valencia based levante flying the flag for La Liga’s top division.

Real Betis v Malaga CF….
Week 25 and Real Betis host one of the above mentioned as Malaga CF make the short journey up the coast to visit their Andalusian neighbours. The home side were having a wonderful season although have slipped a little down the table in recent weeks but are still in a strong position to grab a Europa League spot for next Season. Malaga for their part have been doing incredibly well and much of this is owed to experienced coach Manuel Pellegrini. The ‘Anchovies’ are currently banned from participating in the Champion’s League for at least next season. Malaga have a small squad rife with rumours of player salary issues but Pellegrini’s ability to keep his team concentrating on the job at hand has been nothing short of exceptional. They have been sitting in fourth and fifth place in La Liga through out the season and are just one very winnable game away from a place in this season’s Champion’s League quarter finals.

Generous hosts….
Real Betis are a bit unusual this season in that they have won more games on the road than at their home stadium. They have been beaten five times already this season and whilst losing at home to Barcelona can be expected it is the some of the other defeats which are most eye catching. Home defeats to lowly Mallorca and Granada must be causing Betis coach Pep Mel great concern considering his side have already defeated Real Madrid this season. Although a true reflection of this victory may not be so special as Real Madrid’s away form has not exactly been to a high standard. In assessing Real Betis good season to date it seems they have had a good run for the early part but the wheels have been coming off these past few weeks. Their initial decent away form also seems to be wavering rapidly losing three from their last three culminating in last weeks shocking one nil loss to Espanyol where Betis could only muster one shot on goal!

Malaga Mini-Break….
Malaga as mentioned already are having a great season on the field of play. They arrive here after a tough away game to Porto however their heads will not be down as they will be more than happy with their recent night’s work in Portugal I have expected their excretions in the Champion’s League to have a negative effect on their La Liga form but they have certainly proved me wrong. On the road they are always very strong and although not always winning they are certainly hard to defeat. The Anchovies have won their last two on the road to teams that I would consider of current equal playing stature to Real Betis(Levante & Mallorca). Their next Champion’s League game is not for a couple of weeks and they are out of this week’s Copa del Rey so after Sunday’s game a well earned mini rest is on the cards for Pellegrini’s loyal players.

The only way is up….
Malaga went to Porto last Wednesday and sat with eleven men behind the ball for ninety minutes. They will arrive at Betis with a much more offensive line up as they have nothing to lose at this stage of the season in La Liga and only need to push on for their highest possible placing. These two teams met earlier in the season resulting in a four nil victory for Malaga although Betis had a man sent off after just ten minutes. My feeling earlier in the season was that Betis were a good side, could beat any team of similar stature but would struggle against better opposition. My feeling now is that they are struggling against similar opposition and look under severe pressure against better quality teams…. such as Malaga.
