Over to you Greg……
LA LIGA PREVIEW: REAL SOCIEDAD v ALETICO MADRID.
Live on Sky Sports: Sunday 20.30pm
Atletico at the Anoeta:
Round 8 of Primera Liga and joint table toppers Atletico Madrid have to make the journey to Basque country to try and maintain their liga position and get a positive result at the Anotea against hosts Real Sociedad. The San Sebastian club’s home form this season has been immaculate with three wins from three including last months impressive two nil victory over arch rivals Athletic Bilbao in what was a typical fiery Basque derby. ‘Los Colchoneros’ on Sunday will prove to be far more of a challenge than any of their previous three home ties and they will need to be at their very best to take anything from this encounter.
No Rest for Atletico Super Star:
Unlike fellow La Liga leaders FC Barcelona, after an International break Atletico coach Diego Simeone does not have the luxury of resting his star striker, Falcao, and replacing him with a player of the quality of David Villa. The Columbian number nine has become the most sought after player in the world and rightly so. Outside of currently being the best natural out and out striker on the planet his work rate and graft on the pitch is a trait some other highly paid footballers could learn from. Falcao ended last season with two goals in the Europa League Final and started with a hat-trick in Atletico’s first Liga home game of this season followed by another hat-trick against a first choice Chelsea side in the Super Cup Final. Falcao sits at the top of the goal scoring charts with eight ‘gols’ alongside Senor’s Messi and Ronaldo and if you backed him at 66/1 to be the top goal scorer then you will be smiling now.
Not a one man team:
Falcao will be the first to state the his is not a one man team and right through there is a nice mixture of international quality. The experienced and hardy Uruguayan Diego Godin organises a tight defence and just ahead in midfield is the very skillfull top Turk Arad Turan who works very nicely alongside the young Spaniard koke.
Real Sociedad can bring their own qualities to this tie how ever the central pairing of Mikel Gonzalez and Inigo Martinez will have to be at their very best to keep out the amazing Falcao and his Madrid team mates. Home side coach Phillipe Montanier will be able to gauge the level of progress his team is making this season after this match however I feel his side’s home winning record of season 2012-13 is about to be broken.
