What have we learned…
We found out a lot about next year’s World Cup from a European perspective in this week’s Qualifiers and “Friendly’s”. Erratic France played both legs in a completely different manner mentally. In saying that if they get in a good psychiatrist between now and next summer they are capable of putting in a very good run towards the final. Greece made it through comfortably and if I were a manager it is the Greeks that I would like to avoid more than any other team in the tournament. Whilst not potential victors they will cause a shock or two no doubt. Portugal proved yet again that they ARE a one man team although the excellent Monaco based Joao Moutinho could steal some of the limelight from Ronaldo next summer. Croatia will enjoy the few weeks in the sun.
In the friendly’s the major gamble for the 2014 World Cup, Belgium, are starting to show some major frailties. Spain have the opposite problem to most nations in that they have too many good players and Del Bosque is becoming alarmingly confused culminating in a one nil defeat to South Africa. Italy are scoring goals on a regular basis and will go to another World Cup again with most people giving them no hope but will probably again prove everyone wrong. England lost two at Wembley. A team of England’s stature that does not strike one shot on target in front of 85,000 paying fans at Wembley, even if it was against Germany, does not augur well for their World Cup dream.
Barca Buckling ….?
Atletico Madrid continue to impress and their chances of breaking the Barcelona & Real Madrid Liga monopoly is becoming more and more a reality. Last week saw Lionel Messi pick up a long term injury and this week another blow for FCB as Keeper Victor Valdez limped off in pain in the South Africa friendly, another long term injury. I have always maintained that Neymar is better suited to the middle than the wing and I expect him to be decent deputy in the absence of Messi. However it is the Barcelona replacement keeper Pinto who will be of more concern to all at FCB. At 38 he is still a decent shot stopper but very eccentric and a poor decision maker. On a positive side Pinto will be entertaining to watch and he will also be targeted by the opposition for “Winding Up” so it will be an interesting few months ahead for FCB Fans. The other and more sensible option is Barcelona B keeper Jordi Masip and although will lack majorly for experience at this level he has to start somewhere.
El Derbi Sevillano….
Week 14 and there are some interesting games taking place but for this weekend I am going to review ‘El derbi sevillano’. Bottom club Real Betis make the very short trip across the city to the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium to be hosted by enemy number one Seville FC. In the last four Seville derbies there has been a red card in each one, so as always , expect fireworks. Bottom club Real Betis make the very short trip across the city to the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium to be hosted by enemy number one Seville FC. Both clubs have been competing in this season’s Europa League, a sign of how good a season they had last year. This season has seen contrasting fortunes for Real Betis as they sit bottom after thirteen games. For my money Real Betis are far too good to go down and I Have every confidence that they will climb their way out of trouble beginning with a decent result on the road this Sunday. In their last four Liga games Betis have been beaten by FC Barcelona, Malaga and Atletico Madrid along with a draw with Levante. The defeats to Barca and Madrid are nothing to be ashamed about. In the other two games Betis were very unlucky to concede a last second winner away to Malaga (just before Betis missed a one on one to claim the winner themselves) and the home draw to Levante was secured after having their defender Javi Chica sent off after thirty minutes. In Jorge Molina Betis posses a top class finisher and for a team at the bottom after thirteen games then five goals is certainly a good return from the Spaniard.
Stylish Seville….
Seville sit eleventh and come into this game off the back of a very impressive three goals to one away victory at Espanyol. Unai Emery is back for another stint at managing his beloved Seville and as always his manic management style brings a degree of the unknown. To be fair he has had Seville playing very attractive football this season and one of the main reasons for this is the excellent form of playmaker Ivan Rakitic. The Croatian may be a little hung over after helping his nation qualify for World Cup 2014 last Tuesday and when he is on song he is an absolute pleasure to watch. The biggest surprise of the most recent transfer window is that none of the ‘big clubs’ came in for him but I fear Seville will not be able to hold on to him for much longer. Summer signings Kevin Gameiro and Carlo Bacca, both strikers, have done very well scoring five and six a piece and Real Betis will need to be alert at he back particularly to Columbian Bacca.
High Expectations….!
This will be a game played at a very high tempo and with tackles flying in from all angles. This derby always produces goals and I feel that won’t be changing this Sunday evening. Both Seville and Real Betis play in the traditional Spanish style of nice and attractive offensive football and playing defensively is thankfully NOT in the style of both Unai Emery and Pep Mel. Real Betis sit at bottom and need even a point here but when the whistle is blown to start the game the Betis players will only have one thing on their mind and that is beating their bitter rivals. Real Betis are much better than their current Liga position. From Seville’s viewpoint the hosts would love nothing more than sending their rivals further adrift at the bottom in front of their own fans. Expect a sending off, expect goals, expect a cracking night’s entertainment….Its ‘El derbi sevillano’!….
