Champions League Preview:
VALENCIA v BAYERN MUNICH (19.45)
Lesson’s learned so far….
Match day five of the group stages of the UEFA Champion’s League and to start we will have a quick review on what has been learned so far.
Arsenal have learned that they need to replace powerful but injured midfielder Abou Diaby or they have no chance of going all the way, expect a new signing in January. Manchester City coach Mancini has learned what we all knew months ago, bungling Balotelli is not very good, expect a quick sale in January. Sir Alex has learned from last season and made certain his Manchester United will qualify from the group stage this time. Celtic have thought us that teamwork, graft, commitment and belief can bring down even the biggest teams. Finally we have learned that the level of football coming out of the German Bundesliga is improving rapidly, Shalke and Dortmund have been most impressive and look good to qualify however fellow Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich are not over the line yet and Tuesday evening may prove pivotal in FC Hollywood’s season.
Bundesliga v La Liga….
While all three German teams have got themselves in strong positions with two games to play, the La Liga sides are also doing their own domestic league proud. FC Barcelona and Malaga top their groups while Real Madrid sit second in theirs. Tonight sees the other La Liga representative Valencia host the mighty Bayern Munich and just one goal separates these two top sides in Group F. When Valencia travelled to the Allianz Arena Munich last September they were for large parts on the back foot and deservedly beaten by their German hosts two goals to one. Two months on and Bayern travel to Spain’s third largest city to take on ‘Los Che’ in their own back yard but this time they will be meeting a much improved Spanish outfit from the one they crushed last September.
Mestalla Magic….
Valencia’s home fans are one of the most vocal set of supporters in La Liga and come kick-off the noise inside their 55,000 seat stadium will instill a magical atmosphere. This fan base has no doubt assisted Valencia in been beaten only once at the Mestalla in their last sixteen competitive fixtures but to be fair, losing one nil to Atletico Madrid is not exactly relegation material these days! Super striker Roberto Soldado is in some form scoring a total of seven goals In his last seven games and his strike partner Jonas has already bagged three from three group games. In midfield Algerian Feghouli has impressed on his recent introduction to the starting eleven while season debutant and Mexican international Andres Guardado’s midfield skill and composure has been a major positive addition to an already top class squad.
Travel Sickness….
Whilst the Germans are cruising in their domestic league the CL has seen them in a different light. Impressive victories at home to Valencia and a six one drubbing of French side Lille is decent form but on the road it has been a different story. Jupp Heyncek was tactically outthought by Bate Borisov boss Victor Goncharenko where they suffered a three one reverse but possibly more alarmingly for the Munchen men is the manner of their one nil victory away to Group F whipping boys Lille. A Thomas Muller penalty was the only shot on target the Bavarians could muster against the weak French side and they will need to improve dramatically in this department if they intend on taking anything from their Valencia visit. The big news for the German’s is that star striker Mario Gomez is back in the squad after a long term ankle injury but whether he is fit enough to make the starting eleven is unknown at this time. Franck Ribery was a doubt after suffering a recent rib injury(Valencia defenders take note!) but now looks like starting however his best buddy Arjen Robben is out. For me, the injury prone Robben is a huge loss for the visitors and this could be a key factor in the outcome of this match.
To play are to lay….?
Roberto Soldado is an exceptional player and will play a major role in assisting his Mediterranean team mates move a step closer to Champion’s League glory. As for FC Hollywood, I feel they may again return home with a disappointing away trip but at least they will have had some freshly grown oranges at half-time! The one prediction I can make on this game is that it will be a very tight affair however I do feel the Bookmaker’s odds are slightly incorrect and it is this factor which has persuaded me to play…AND..Lay!
