The ground on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival is being described as Good to Soft, good in places on the Old Course after some dry weather overnight.
The Old Course will be used on Tuesday and Wednesday and although the ground was being desciribed on Monday evening as being Good in places. Clerk of the Course, Simon Claisse commented on his delight at the conditions at the track; ‘’We’re delighted with the conditions and we have always cautioned that if we a dry spell we would dry out relatively quickly despite all the rain we’ve had.’’
Although it was also said that Claisse may be forced to water the track with the threat of further drying conditions, it does not appear that this will happen much to the delight of trainers, Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls.
Claisse continued by saying; ‘’While it’s unlikely, we’ll water if there was any concern about any of the ground becoming good to firm we would make sure that didn’t happen. What will be interesting this week is how much more it dries out over the four days.’’
Temperatures on day one are expected to reach 12-13C with some sunny spells.
The going on the Cross Country course remains good to soft, soft in places ahead of the Cross Country race on Wednesday while the New Course, which will be used on Thursday and Friday is good to soft.
