PREVIEW
Failure to beat Chelsea at the Etihad today will surely mean any hopes Manchester City had of retaining the Premier League title are over.
It’s been a difficult week for Roberto Mancini with a fiery press conference on Friday suggesting he is feeling the pressure after a disappointing season for his charges. He accused several players – Samir Nasri most notably – of not showing 100% commitment or effort this term and it will be interesting to see who he starts for this massive match.
Another manager under pressure is Chelsea’s Rafael Benitez who saw his men labour to a 1-1 draw with Sparta Prague on Thursday night. Performances like that have hardly helped him endear himself to the fans and a loss here will be greeted with more boos from the terraces.
The Blues have lost their last three visits to City but the Citizens have only won of the last four league meetings between the sides. The hosts have not gone four Premier League games without a win since November 2009 when they drew seven in a row. That poor spell led to Mark Hughes getting the sack – a fate Mancini is desperate to avoid.
Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez returned to form with a bang in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Leeds and the Citizens also have influential midfielder Yaya Toure back from Africa Cup of Nations duty.
They should have too much firepower for a hit and miss Chelsea team and are taken to keep a modicum of pressure on rivals Manchester United in the race for the league crown.
