Birmingham City head into tonight’s clash with Maribor in the knowledge that even three points might not be enough to help secure a safe passage to the next round of the Europa League. As it stands, Blues are three points behind both Braga and Brugge, but the two clubs meet each other in the final match. For Blues to qualify, Braga must win as they have an inferior head-to-head record against Brugge.
Whatever happens in Portugal, Birmingham must win to have any chance which should make for a cracking game. Chris Hughton’s side picked up a great win when they last met Maribor as the side fought back from a goal down.
Birmingham’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Braga last time out was their first away defeat in the UEFA competition after two wins and a draw. However, it’s been at St Andrews where Birmingham have been let down and they are winless from two matches there. In the home draw and defeat in Group H they have conceded five times.
Maribor have picked up just one point in the group and have lost both their away games in the group. Birmingham are more than capable of getting the win and I’m happy to tip the home side at 1.48 on BETDAQ. Then it’s a case of hoping for a Braga triumph to make for a nervy evening for Birmingham fans.
