PREVIEW
Opposing Liverpool at home over the last year has been an extremely profitable strategy and it looks likely to pay dividends once more tonight. Brendan Rodgers’ side welcome cash-rich Russians Anzhi Makhachkala to Anfield for a Europa League clash.

The Reds only beat Premier League basement side Reading 1-0 on the weekend to earn their first home win of the league season and they will have to raise their game considerably to see off a dangerous Anzhi led by former Barcelona man Samuel Eto’o and coached by the respected Guus Hiddink.

His side have won five of their last six games, scoring 12 and conceding none in those victories. The only blip was a 1-1 draw away to Udinese in this competition – the same Udinese that came to Anfield and won 3-2 on matchday two.

With a lack of options up front and Rodgers’ like of playing younger, less experienced players in this tournament, Liverpool look there for the taking. Anzhi have made no secrets about their ambitions to become a force in Europe and will see this first game against English opposition as an opportunity to send a message to the rest of the continent.
