Although qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League remains in their hands, Chelsea are walking a tightrope. The situation is simple enough: the winner of tonight’s game at Stamford Bridge will progress, with the losing side finishing third and finding itself in the Europa League. A score draw puts Valencia through, while 0-0 is enough for Chelsea – unless Leverkusen lose to a Genk outfit which has taken only two points from its five games so far.
So a repeat of the outcome when the teams met in Spain would put Valencia through and it will undoubtedly be a nervous evening for the Stamford Bridge faithful, who have seen their team lose at home three times in the last six weeks.
However, Blues fans will point to a perfect home record in Group E so far. They saw their team beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on matchday one and Genk 5-0 on matchday three.
Chelsea are rightly comfortable favourites on the Daq, at 1.78, and will be further encouraged by the fact that Valencia drew 0-0 in Belgium and lost 2-1 in Germany. Chelsea have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League in each of the last eight years and they should preserve that impressive record by getting the result they need tonight.
