PREVIEW
Tommy Haas, at 34, is in the veteran stage of his career but is still capable of playing to a smart level of form on his day, as he showed last month when he shocked subsequent Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in the final of the Halle tournament. He was poor though last week, when losing in straight sets to Pavol Cervenak in Stuttgart, and the former world number two will seek to bounce back in today’s second round match against Frenchman Gilles Simon.

Simon is a former world number six but a run of mixed form over the last couple of years has seen the right-hander drop to 12th. His recent displays have been decidedly average, winning just two matches in his last three tournaments before today. In the first round he was given a scare by the Argentinean Carlos Berlocq and will have to raise his game if he is to justify favoritism versus Haas.

The German saw off the Slovakian Martin Klizan with the loss of just three games in his first round encounter and with the support of the home crowd won’t have to raise his level too much to give Simon a few worries out there on the clay court.

Two of the three meetings between the pair have gone to three sets and this makes most appeal once more from a betting perspective.
