Starting with Serena Williams and 7.0 looks far too big even allowing for her age and being some way off her best. She is still a force to be reckoned with in the Slams and I have to keep her onside.
She starts off tomorrow against Maria Sharapova on Arthur Ashe Stadium – surely the highlight of the first round and amazingly the first time the two players have played each other in the New York Slam.
Two other players to add to the portfolio would be Karolina Pliskova at around 13.5 and Bianca Andreescu at 14.5.
Pliskova starts her campaign at 4pm today against fellow Czech Tereza Martincová.
Seeded third, Pliskova was a finalist in 2016 and her serve alone can take her deep into the tournament. She leads the WTA Tour in aces (346) and service games won percentage (80.8) and her game is ideally suited to the hard courts.
Bianca Andreescu starts off on Tuesday against American Katie Volynets.
The 19-year-old Canadian made a winning return after a spell off injured which saw her miss both Roland Garros (retired early) and Wimbledon completely.
She looks a prodigious talent and very much a player that could progress well from the second quarter where she will face a possible second round match against Simona Halep.
