MATCH POINT: Our tennis tipping column is now 22.2 points up. Next up: recommended bets for the US Open. Is there value outside of the ‘Big Three’?

The US Open Mens is not immune to throwing up a surprise winner and we need to build that into our tournament portfolio.

Andy Murray caused a minor surprise when winning in 2012 (on a surface that’s not his best) and then two year’s later Marin Čilić took the title at Flushing Meadow followed by Stan Wawrinka in 2016.

Those aside, there’s been domination from defending champion Djokovic, Federer (but not since 2008) and Nadal.

The BETDAQ market (and take advantage of the 0% COMMISSION offer on all tennis until 8 September – see terms and conditions) have the ‘Big Three’ in the first three places.  Surely though there is value outside of the Djokovic, Nadal, Federer triumvirate that will give us a good run for our money and at the very least a trading out opportunity when we get deeper into the tournament?

For me there are two players that fit this criteria.

Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev are priced at around 46.0 and 19.0 ops BETDAQ with the tournament about to get underway.

Thiem starts his campaign on Tuesday against the Italian Thomas Fabbiano – the two players meet for the first time but Thiem seeded 4 should account for the world number 87.

Thiem’s preparation hasn’t been ideal. He has played only one hard-court match since Wimbledon and after progressing to the 1/4 Final at the Montreal Masters was forced to pull out of the Cincinnati Masters due to a cold.

However, he remains a prodigious talent and you get the feeling that he will break through sooner rather than later.

He made the 1/4 Finals here last season when he came close to beating Rafael Nadal.

Daniil Medvedev plays his first round match on Monday against Prajnesh Gunneswaran. Medvedev is very much the in-form player. The 23-year-old Russian is now world number 5 and beat Djokovic in Cincinnati where he took the title down with a win over David Goffin in the final.

He’s in the top half of the draw which includes Federer and Djokovic but that is built into his price.

As well as the long shots, I always like to have some insurance and whilst predictable that insurance card has to come in the shape of Novak Djokovic at around 2.2. He’s been there, done that and got several t-shirts.
