It’s always difficult to find value in the early rounds of Grand Slams, but Janko Tipsarevic looks a fair bet to cause a minor surprise and beat current BETDAQ favourite Fernando Verdasco in their second round match later today.
Both men enjoyed straight sets wins in their first round – Verdasco winning 6-2 6-3 6-1 against journeyman Marc Gicquel ranked just 124th in the world and Tipsarevic having a harder game Nicolas Mahut. The Serbian came through 6-2 7-6 6-1 and as the eighth seed should be confident of seeing off his Spanish rival, who is 41 places below him in the world rankings.
Tipsarevic has won four of their six encounters, including the last two. They have all been on a hard surface, though, and Verdasco is a clay court specialist.
With the poor weather in Paris over the last few days, and hardly the most encouraging forecast for today, the courts are likely to play quite ‘heavy’ with the balls slowing down through the air. That will arguably favour Verdasco more, but Tipsarevic is a genuine top-15 player with enough clay form himself to make one think he handle conditions just as well.
He has been inconsistent this term but looks value at around 2.25 on BETDAQ to beat Verdasco, available at around 1.75.
