Kaiserslautern have failed to beat Hoffenheim in four previous meetings but will bid to break that record tonight when they take them on in the first leg of their Bundesliga play-off. Unlike most leagues, the team occupying the final relegation spot in the German first division takes on the team who finished third in the second division to decide over two legs who plays top-flight football next season.
Since being promoted in 2008, Hoffenheim have not finished lower than 11th so this season has been a huge disappointment. They do enter this crunch clash on the back of a superb 2-1 victory over Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund, though, that ultimately prevented them from being relegated automatically by a single point. But they did concede a league high of 67 goals this term.
After being relegated last season, Kaiserslautern, the 1998 Bundesliga champions, have lost just two of their last 11 matches and, with attacking riches in the likes of Mohammadou Idrissou and Albert Bunjaku, Franco Foda’s side will be hopeful they can pull off a surprise.
The two sides meet again on Monday in the deciding fixture, so many of you may expect a cagey first leg. However, only one of Hoffenheim’s last ten league games saw less than 2.5 goals so, at a big looking 2.05 on BETDAQ, take a chance on over 2.5 goals.
