Three reasons to back Oakland
1. The Raiders upgraded their defensive personnel in the offseason and the Jets should have a terrible offense (again), so the 5-point number seems a bit excessive. This should be a tight, low-scoring game.
2. Rookie Derek Carr played very well in the preseason and he’ll be facing a depleted Jets secondary that struggled last season even when fully healthy. Considering what we saw from Geno Smith in 2013, it’s reasonable to assume that Oakland will have the best quarterback on the field on Sunday.
3. With Maurice Jones-Drew joining Darren McFadden in the backfield, the Raiders have an impressive 1-2 punch that should ease the burden on the quarterback. This could be the best Oakland offense we’ve seen in several years.
Three reasons to back New York
1. The Jets are better than the Raiders on both sides of the ball and they’re playing at home, where they’re 4-1 against the number in their last 5 outings.
2. Oakland quarterback Derek Carr is a rookie who will be making his first career start on Sunday, and he’ll be doing so against a defense that was one of the league’s better units last season. Jets coach Rex Ryan is known for his defensive expertise and I’m sure he’s got a few things up his sleeve for the rookie. Trusting Carr in this spot is nearly impossible.
3. New York upgraded their offensive personnel in the offseason, signing capable veterans like receiver Eric Decker and running back Chris Johnson. The new and improved New York offense will have every chance to shine on Sunday against the miserable Oakland defense, a unit that ranked 22nd overall and 28th against the pass in 2013.
