Lewis Hamilton: Why the Mercedes man has been streets ahead this season
Although there is perhaps a slight sense of inevitability in Formula 1 this season, nothing should be taken away from Lewis Hamilton’s achievements.
The Mercedes driver has been in stunning form in 2020, winning nine of the 13 races in the calendar so far.
The 35-year-old has reigned supreme in Austria, Hungary, Great Britain, Spain, Belgium, Italy (twice), Germany and Portugal, while he finished second in the other Grand Prix in Great Britain and third in Russia.
His superb driving means he’s finished off the podium on just two occasions this season – a fourth in the opening race in Austria and seventh in Italy.
Those nine race wins have seen the Englishman overtake Michael Schumacher as the F1 driver with the most race victories ever with a remarkable 93 triumphs, and given his dominance during the 2020 campaign, you’d be pretty confident he’ll wrack up a fair few more before he retires.
He currently holds an 85-point lead over Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas as he seeks to win a seventh World Drivers’ Championship – a title that would mean he’d equal Schumacher’s record which has stood since 2004.
It appears that record-equalling title isn’t far off and if Hamilton can continue his 2020 Purple Patch, it won’t be long until he’s lifting that coveted trophy for a seventh time.
