DERBY WEEKEND: The Curragh start their Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival tonight. SHAMROCK picks out his best bets on the card.
The Irish Derby Festival gets underway this evening and the big race is staged at 6.30pm tomorrow when eight runners will line up including John Gosden’s Jack Hobbs who will be odds-on to end Aidan O’Brien’s recent monopoly on the race.
Anastasia O’Brien gets her chance to shine tonight in the DoneDeal Apprentice Derby at 7.00.
She is onboard the lightly raced On A Pedestal who showed much improved form to chase home stable companion Loved at Limerick. Anastasia rode that day too and the partnership should be able to go one better here.
Obvious danger is the Gordon Elliott trained Eshtiaal who has been in brilliant form over jumps rattling up a hat-trick within a week but that sequence might take it’s toll with the switch back in distance.
Another filly I’m keen on tonight is the Dermot Weld trained Eshera who made an encouraging debut at Gowran Park when chasing home Rivers Of Babylon. Although she started favourite for that race it looks better with the subsequent win of Rivers Of Babylon at Navan and she also didn’t run too badly in a Listed race this week at Naas.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: On A Pedestal (7.00 Curragh)
NEXT BEST: Eshera (5.55 Curragh)
