SHAMROCK ON FRIDAY: SHAMROCK previews day four of Royal Ascot. His NAP yesterday Alive Alive Oh was withdrawn prior to the race.
A quieter day for the Irish trainers yesterday but well done to Joanna Morgan for her win with Roca Tumu in the Britannia Stakes.
It was disappointing to see Alive Alive Oh withdrawn on account of the ground.
Now for Friday:
2:30 Albany Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (2yo, Class 1, 6f, 19 runners)
Unbeaten Sandiva has been very well backed this morning and will start a warm favourite with Frankie Dettori onboard. Best of the Irish runners may be WONDERFULLY who got up on the line to make a winning debut in a blanket finish at Fairyhouse. The bare form leaves her with something to find but that certainly is not out of the question with the stables runners having such a good week. Win and place for me.
SELECTION: Wonderfully (WIN and PLACE)
3:05 King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 4f, 8 runners)
BATTLE OF MARENGO went into the Derby the better fancied of Aidan O’Brien’s quintet but emerged second best as Ruler Of The World stayed on strongly to win. There was certainly no disgrace in his fourth effort though – which was looking like being second place until the final few strides. He was on a long winning run before that and can get back on the winning streak here in a race where Derby runners haven’t had a great record but as Dawn Approach showed earlier in the week it’s possible !!
SELECTION: Battle Of Marengo (WIN)
3:45 Coronation Stakes (British Champions Series) (Fillies’ Group 1) (Rnd) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 17 runners)
BIG BREAK has two lengths to find with Just The Judge on Irish 1,000 Guineas form but could be the better of the pair today. She was drawn wide at the Curragh which didn’t look to suit but still ran well and you get the feeling she is capable of further improvement. The BETDAQ market also expects a big run as she is challenging for favouritism with Just The Judge and Newmarket Guineas winner Sky Lantern – all around 5/1 in the market.
SELECTION: Big Break (WIN, NAP)
4:25 Wolferton Handicap (Listed) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m 2f, 15 runners)
Just the one Irish raider here – top weight INIS MEAIN who continues to improve and bolted home in a Listed race at Limerick last time out. Bulk of form on ground with give but handled good ground at the Curragh when second to Parish Hall again in Listed company. Tough ask to defy top weight but has to be respected and good chances of a place at least.
SELECTION: Inis Meain (WIN and PLACE)
5:00 Queen’s Vase In Memory Of Sir Henry Cecil (Group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 2m, 15 runners)
LEADING LIGHT is popular in the market and I’ll side with Aidan O’Brien’s Montjeu colt but everyone is guessing to some extent as to whether he will get this marathon two mile trip. He’s certainly improving and comes here on a four-timer and stayed on well to win over 10 furlongs at the Curragh latest start but this is unchartered waters. Might be worth a place lay too as insurance. The thinking being if he stays he wins – if not he could be out with the washing.
SELECTION: Leading Light (WIN) with insurance PLACE LAY
5:35 Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap) (3yo+, Class 2, 7f, 27 runners)
Find the winner of this and you deserve a medal. Looks tough for the Irish runners but perhaps a speculative place on recent Curragh fourth CAMPANOLOGY could bring a return.
SELECTION: Campanology (PLACE)
