BACK-TO-BACK NAPS FOR SHAMROCK: After Amron Lad (WON 4-9), Shamrock went for a place nap yesterday on Mystic Desir (2nd, place nap WON 2/1), a short-head away from victory. In fact, the horse led everywhere after the last two flights but on the line. He was paying around 2/1 a place on BETDAQ pre-race.
Watch out, Stack is about. This is Tommy Stack’s time of year and, with one run one win in the last two weeks – three out of seven this year – the Golden man is napped in the opener at Dundalk tonight.
His runner, Celerina (6.20), is a bit of a thinker so she has to be caught fresh, and here she is, after a 208-day holiday, rated 2lb behind the favourite but getting 5lb.
That favourite, and the mare’s main rival, is Balmont Mast, also appearing after a long absence but with the trainer saying he will improve for the run.
In fact, only Calm Bay of any of the runners in this field has raced in the last 154 days and he is the outsider of the six.
Balmont Mast’s rider, Johnnny Murtagh, top jockey here at Dundalk, could get that little bit extra from Rasputin (7.50), which will end his frustrating run of places in this, his first handicap. The draw has been kind.
At last, after stalls 8 (twice) and 10 in his last two runs, the dual Dundalk winner, Rocky’s Pride (6.50), has also been cut a kinder deal, being granted the four stall.
He is a very fast starter and Seamie Heffernan is a fast finisher when riding for Garvan Donnelly. Their score here is three out of six (50%), mainly thanks to ‘Rocky’.
