Roberto Di Matteo’s honeymoon period is officially over as Chelsea were beaten 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening in a result that somewhat flattered the visitors. The worrying thing for Chelsea fans is that it was the first real test of the new regime and the performance was not up to scratch.

The Blues are back at the Bridge for Tottenham’s visit as Di Matteo hopes to build on his unbeaten start at home. Spurs’ season is threatening to come away at the seams after a torrid few weeks that has seen a ten point lead on Arsenal go up in smoke. The Gunners are now one point better off than their rivals and if Spurs get beat in West London, Arsenal could be four points clear by 5pm Saturday afternoon.

The situation looks bleak for Spurs given the run Harry Redknapp’s side are on and because of their woeful record at the Bridge. It’s been 22 years since Spurs won at Chelsea and in that run they have lost far more often than not. It should be an open game as Spurs know no other way to play, but I fancy Chelsea to get the three points to add to Spurs’ woes.

By the time Manchester United kick off on Monday night against Fulham they could be two points behind City. United were moments away from heading into the weekend with a four point lead before Samir Nasri’s goal rescued City.

United’s dismal adventure in Europe came to an end last week, but they remain ruthless in the league. It’s at this time of year that all the experience in the squad comes to fruition with the side coming together when it matters most. United showed no mercy against Wolves last Sunday as they cut City’s goal difference lead and Sir Alex will see this game as an opportunity to bring it even closer.

Fulham were hammered 5-0 by United at the Cottage earlier in the year and a similar scoreline looks on the cards. Wayne Rooney is in fine form and would like a couple here if he’s to reach his manager’s target of 40 goals for the season.
