South Korea will surely fancy their chances of getting the job done against South Africa too.
South Korea come into the game at the odds on favourites at 1.69 with South Africa 6.0 and the draw is 4.0 at the time of writing, while in the other game, Mexico are the marginal odds on favourites at 1.98 with Czechia 3.8 and the draw is 4.2. It has been about as good a tournament as Mexico could have asked for as co-hosts. Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez goals saw off South Africa 2-0 in front of a superb atmosphere Estadio Azteca on the opening night of the World Cup, and Javier Aguirre’s side followed it up with a narrow but well managed 1-0 win over South Korea. Surely in a long World Cup with top spot already confirm, they have to rest some players here. They have a Round of 32 tie back at the Azteca too – they can’t be risking key players in a match that carries no real consequence for Mexico’s position.

From that point of view, the 1.98 isn’t an appealing price on Mexico. Czechia have some much to play for too; obviously you have to also consider the players who come in for Mexico will be desperate for a spot in the main starting XI, and also Czechia are quite limited as we know. But whatever way you look at things, the 1.98 on Mexico doesn’t exactly jump off the page as value. I would be keen to keep stakes small in that game; Under 2.5 goals at 1.83 has to be an option too. Mexico will want as little drama as possible, and obviously Czechia are limited in attack – they grind out results rather than dominate games and I really wouldn’t be surprised to see a low-tempo and low scoring game.
That dead-rubber status for Mexico makes South Africa against South Korea the genuinely pivotal game of the day. South Africa’s tournament got off to the worst possible start, beaten 2-0 by Mexico in a match that also saw them reduced to nine men after two red cards, but Hugo Broos’s side responded superbly against Czechia, fighting back from going 1-0 down. They are limited though, and obviously South Korea are a set up on Czechia. That kept South Africa’s hopes of a first ever World Cup knockout stage appearance alive heading into this final round. They’ll know only a win really guarantees anything, so they’ll have to change tactics here and try to create more. That should actually open the door for South Korea in my opinion.
South Korea have to fancy their chances of a win here, but obviously depending on the Mexico result they could finish second with a draw too. I would have to be a little concerned about that if say Mexico are leading in their game, and there’s ten minutes left with South Korea level – they won’t exactly be chasing the game then. However, I still feel that the 1.69 is worth backing. South Africa’s fighting spirit over the last two matches suggests they won’t go down without a fight, but South Korea have the attacking ability to get the job done here – South Africa have looked pretty limited and a change of tactics here will open them up at the back in my opinion. I’m happy to keep stakes small across both games; a small bet on South Korea and a small lay on Mexico.
