‘JACKPOT’ CHANCE TO LAY INTO BALLYDOYLE: Shamrock rates Dermot Weld’s chances of hitting the jackpot at Leopardstown today at 11.0 and 13.5 Betdaq morning offers, and opposes the slow-starting Ballydoyle runners.
Who’s this then? Form figures of 3002200 on Day One of the Flat season, among them two beaten favourites. Yes, it’s the talk of the Irish turf again that Aidan O’Brien is making his customary slow start.
With 10 Ballydoyle runners at Leopardstown today, there must be some of them begging our wallets for a lay, if only because eight are engaged in the same three opening races, so can’t all win.
But, would you believe it, punters dazzled by the Ballydoyle brilliance have made O’Brien horses favourite in all three of those races.
The one to oppose, when the odds are against a stable, must surely be the odds-on shot: Furner’s Green (5.25) has only ever raced with plenty of cut in the ground but was tips on at the time of writing, with bookie and Betdaq alike.
With three front-runners – Hit The Jackpot, Honourable Emperor and Silver Sycamore – there will be no peace for a horse short of a gallop. I remember Dermot Weld’s Hit The Jackpot turning over an odds-on favourite at Galway in fine style and 11.0 looks too big on Betdaq this morning.
Another massive offer is the 13.5 Lake George (5.55), a big improver last season who started off with a firm-ground win. He could be ready on his seasonal debut again.
The 10-furlong handicap (6.55) looks wide open but – back to the beginning of this column – the O’Brien colt, Robin Hood, is favourite, despite having missed the last 549 days of racing. Surely not, at a time the stable is under a cloud.
Malayan Mist, another Weld runner who loves the ground, is reportedly pregnant, and this often dramatically improves a filly, and she’s another early starter (won her first two races last season).
