WINNING SATURDAY NAP: SHAMROCK’S Saturday NAP and only bet CLARCAM WON 10/11. The John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase is the highlight of racing on Sunday – a small but very select field go to post at 2.00.
Just the six runners for the John Durkan but it’s not usually a race that attracts a large field.
Whilst not high in quantity – it is strong in quality as you would expect from a Grade 1.
Lord Windermere makes his seasonal reappearance and is having his first run since his triumph in the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival where he rallied up the hill to pip fellow Irish raider On His Own a short head and then had to survive a stewards to confirm his victory. Based on what we saw last season the expectation must be that Lord Windermere might need a couple of runs under his belt to get back to the peak form we witnessed in March.
He’s also up against a couple of race fit rivals today in the shape of Boston Bob and hat-trick seeking Don Cossack.
Boston Bob won the Punchestown Gold Cup last season which followed up his previous success in the Melling Chase at Aintree. He was beaten 29 lengths on his seasonal reappearance at Down Royal when third to Road To Riches in the JNWINE.com Champion Chase which was a little disappointing from the 9/4 favourite.
Don Cossack has a touch of class and his win in the Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse came in this top level. He was a faller in the RSA Chase at the Festival but has regained his confidence and recently won a couple of small field races in good style including here at Punchestown.
I still feel though that Don Cossack is vulnerable at Grade 1 level but gets the nod today purely on the fitness angle.
The big race at Cork is the Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase at 2.15. Willie Mullins again holds the aces with his two runners including last year’s winner Twinlight but Days Hotel makes plenty of appeal on the BETDAQ place market having finished runner-up to Twinlight at Navan in the Ladbrokes Ireland Fortria Chase last month.
