SHAMROCK OFF TO A FLYER: SHAMROCK started the new week with a WINNING NAP from his only bet of the day. RAE’S CREEK (NAP) WON 10/11 but was ODDS AGAINST on BETDAQ pre-race.
Rae’s Creek won in grand style at Ballinrobe last night to land the nap by a comfortable (and eased down) three and a half lengths with a full 12 lengths back to the third horse.
I’m back at Ballinrobe tonight for their all-jumps card.
The morning going/weather tweet is as follows:
Current going: good to yielding. Forecast overcast with sunny spells
Aidan O’Brien’s Plinth should be the banker of the year in the opener! He ran a stormer when second to Abbyssial in the Grade 1 Four Year Old Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival and looks to have a very easy task here. It’s one of those occasions that 1.26 on BETDAQ actually looks GOOD value – but I’m not going there with the nap – too short, even for me!
There’s an 18 strong field going to post for the McHale Fusion Vario Maiden Hurdle at 7.00 but that doesn’t put me off having a bet.
As often is the case with maiden hurdles they become quite easy to narrow down – and this race has gone to a horse in single figure odds for the last five runnings.
Jessie Harrington did me a favour with the nap yesterday and she has a strong candidate here in Keppols Queen.
She made a really encouraging debut at Limerick when making Lord Adare (who went off at 2/5) pull out all the stops but didn’t really build on that when finishing in mid-division at Cork next time out and it’s possible that she was flattered by that debut effort.
The answer may again lie with Aidan O’Brien. His King Leon ran well in a Roscommon bumper last time out and can hopefully start to translate some of that ability to the jumps.
It seems odd, at the end of May, to be napping an Aidan O’Brien trained horse in a maiden hurdle at Ballinrobe but that’s just how I’m rolling today.
