We welcome back THE BETDAQ PUNTER this week.
He looks back on a tough punting week on BETDAQ on a day-by-day basis – this is followed by his bets of the week….
This week he is recommending bets on the football and racing.
Friday
Rain rain go away – yes some racing survived (though not Ffos Las), but even an idiot punter like me knew the stamina sapping ground would see more than a few surprises, and not ones I was likely to find. As betting is supposed to be fun as well as an attempt at profitability, I decided to back the outsiders to very small stakes on BETDAQ knowing that the prices would invariably be better than SP. No point in boring you with a list but I ended up with a stack of losers (45 to be precise!) and only the two winners, but as they paid 26.0 (The Rainbow Hunter, SP 16/1) and 32.0 (Runswick Royal SP 16/1), I ended up a few pounds to the good and had a whole lot of fun in the process – I might try the same thing again when I can find the time!
Saturday
Sometimes I make the fatal error of working out my winnings only to see it all go horribly wrong at what feels like the last minute, and today was certainly one of those days. I reeled in my racing bets with the ground making fitness such a key issue but sat there watching the TV looking at the football scores, and pretty much counting my winnings. My three doubles and a treble were never going to make me rich once Crystal Palace were 2-0 down at Leeds but there was still money to be made as West Bromwich Albion had already won (3.2 BETDAQ odds), and Watford were cruising at 0-2 away to Blackpool and even when the home side scored I was still sitting pretty, working out that with the BETDAQ price of 3.85 I was about to collect 12.32 times my original stake for the double. Naturally, I should not have tempted fate like that as the Tangerines equalised in the 90th minute torpedoing my bet and leaving me with more of a frown than the wry grin I ought to have had after all my years of experience of disappointment.
Sunday
With all the racing in the UK abandoned I had to turn my attention to the football as Vettel looked too short to win the Grand Prix, though nothing really leapt off the page. Once again, greed was my undoing as I backed Chelsea v Manchester City to be a draw (3.2 BETDAQ) but doubled up with Swansea to beat Liverpool (2.9 BETDAQ), which ended 0-0 as well – two boring games and costing me money too. Time for a Sunday roast and some down time if I can tear myself away from the tablet that is…..
Monday
To my amusement Kempton and Taunton survived yet the all-weather at Southwell had to be abandoned – you just couldn’t make it up! I had a busy day at work so had to wait for lunchtime to get on to my BETDAQ account and place a couple of bets. A quick look round the internet seemed to say that Snake Eyes was a good thing but even at 1.3 on BETDAQ I could not be tempted, which turned out to be the right move as he was beaten at 1/5 starting price. Mentalist won for Venetia Williams (and for me) at BETDAQ odds of 2.8, but sadly Benny The Swinger found a new way to throw away a race after taking the wrong course the race before much to the annoyance of on course punters, apparently. This time the weight of my money at 2.1 on BETAQ seemed to be enough to make him swerve from one side of the track to the other, giving away more than the three lengths he was beaten by, so just a small profit on the day.
Tuesday
I live down South and I still cannot believe that Lingfield went ahead! Instead of looking for B for Blinkers or V for Visor I should have been searching out F for Flippers or S for Snorkel after all the rain seen at the Surrey course. Discretion can be the better part of valour or something like that, so I decided to have some bets on the evening football instead, and for once I actually got it right. Two premier league matches saw Aston Villa play Reading and Sunderland play Queens Park Rangers, all goal shy teams in my book and unlikely to provide much entertainment. The under 2.5 goals market seemed a great place to play, and although others obviously felt exactly the same looking at the odds (1.94 and 1.92 on BETDAQ), they were the only bets I could find. 1-0 and 0-0 will not have cheered up their fans but it worked for me, and is a BETDAQ market I may play in a lot more often in future.
Wednesday
All weather only on the racing and that is not the highest quality, so time to look at the football again to see if we can add a few more pounds to the BETDAQ account. Odds on looks the order of the evening so Manchester United (1.6), Manchester City (1.86), and Spurs (1.99) will do for me in as small treble and for once they came off for a lovely little 5.83 return – not a fortune but better than a loser.
Thursday
Newbury and Taunton put on some quality racing this afternoon and it would be rude of me not to have an interest. Aaim To Prosper let me down in the Newbury opener even at BETDAQ odds of 3.0 but went in to my notebook after a pleasing debut over hurdles for Paul Nicholls, while a quick search of the internet and social networking told me they quietly fancied Smart Exit to run a big race in the 2.50pm at Taunton. A little 11.5 the win and 3.25 on BETDAQ later and I checked the result on my phone only to find he was pulled up when a furlong or two behind the main contenders. Don’t believe everything you read is all I can add to that sentence.
Conclusions:
Bet of the week – a bad week at the office to be fair and a small odds on win treble on the Tuesday night football was the nearest to a highlight.
Disaster of the week – Blackpool equalising against Watford in the last minute (well, in injury time) and blowing my nice double with West Bromwich Albion out of the water.
THIS WEEKEND…..
Looking ahead with a smile on my face, because I am sure the football results will all drop in to place some time soon – we have done it before and will do it again, but will it be this weekend? On Saturday I like the looks of Tottenham away to Fulham at 2.4 on BETDAQ as they seem to be gradually getting the hang of the Villas-Boas way, West Bromwich Albion who look good value at 2.2 at home to Stoke and will be looking to bounce back after mid week defeat, Leeds who did well to comfortably beat Crystal Palace last weekend and can see off Huddersfield at odds of 3.1 on BETDAQ, and Watford who cannot seem to stop scoring and should be the best of the week at BETDAQ odds of 1.9 at home to Barnsley. I will back them in an accumulator to small stakes but have a bigger bet as a single on Watford, who are easily my most confident choice.
Rugby Union were next on my weekend list but odds of 1.15 about New Zealand to beat England is too rich for my pocket, while even I can give “I’m A Celebrity…” a miss for punting purposes, thank you, ditto X-Factor, which leads me to the horses once again. Bangor has already been abandoned after the River Dee burst its banks, but hopefully everything else will now survive, and Newcastle look intriguing with the Fighting Fifth hurdle their big race of the day. With Champion hurdler Rock On Ruby out because of the conditions we have an odds on favourite in Cinders And Ashes but I prefer Countrywide Flame at the odds and 5.6 on BETDAQ is a steal. Only a four year old, he has improvement to come, arrives in top condition after a rewarding campaign on the flat, and has good form on softer ground, so all in all he has chances, and seems worth a point as a value call.
This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):
Weekend Football

3pts Win Watford at 1.9
