THE BETDAQ PUNTER returns with his usual mix of looking back on the highs and lows of his betting week on BETDAQ and looking forward to this weekend.

It was a profitable weekend seven days ago thanks to a winning treble on the basketball – now for this weekend with bets on the horses and football.

But firstly, how did last week fare?

Friday

One of the better Fridays to look forward to, with plenty of racing, more top rated horses to back (fingers crossed on that one) plus a real grudge match of a Championship play off between Crystal Palace and Brighton in the evening where I doubt there will be any prisoners taken – what more can a punter ask for? Cutting a long (and expensive) story short, the horses did not deliver as expected (no winners from four selections in the afternoon and just the one winner at 7.4 (Klynch) from another six in the evening), so all my attention switched to the footie.
I freely admit I like the way Brighton play and I can afford to throw away a point in a game where it may yet come down to luck as to who walks away with a first leg lead? Home advantage versus better team left me confused so I laid Palace at 2.65 and got away with is in one of the more entertaining 0-0 draws I have seen in a while and gave me a small profit as well, which was just what was needed.

Saturday

wiganfaA trip to Lingfield proved a disaster though I would not have done any better at Ascot where my big punt on Main Sequence on BETDAQ at 2.85 went miserably astray – though I may have stayed a lot drier. Taking my youngest son (12) with me we enjoyed the opener (where I pointed out the 19.5 winner to him and then backed something else), before the heavens opened, though I did get a big bet on Secret Gesture (2.1) before hiding under the roof of a packed grandstand. She did win with her head in her chest but beat very little in doing so and her current Oaks price of about 4.7 is frankly laughable. Coming home after the third race (Greatwood a non-runner) I settled down to watch the FA Cup Final with an angrier than usual bet on Manchester City to be leading at half time and full time at BETDAQ odds of 2.0. Lazy would be my word of choice about the favourites first half performance as if they had been any more laid back they would have fallen over, but as a true football fan I have to add, let the layers keep my cash. Money talks, money makes the world go round, and all the other wonderful clichés were made to look totally stupid with a deserved Wigan success against money bags Manchester City which most neutrals will have loved, even me in the end, and those who backed Wigan on BETDAQ at odds around the 9.3 mark, I salute you from a distance.

Sunday

Having started the day brightly by checking the results to find my Basketball treble for last week had come off, and there was more money in the old BETDAQ account, a normally quiet day became a football bonanza, and for reasons unknown I decided to bet in every premiership match (mug)? Being lazy, favourites seemed the way forward so Tottenham (1.9), Everton (1.57), Liverpool (1.95), Norwich (2.38), Newcastle (2.48), Southampton (2.75), and Manchester United (1.31) were all backed to level stakes so very much a case of fingers crossed! Although I didn’t have a bet I did watch the Watford Leicester play off second leg and what a finale – I have never seen anything like it and the benefits of the modern age, and the ability to watch “television” on other devices has never been more welcome – what an amazing game. Anyway, Spurs won to give me some cash back as did four of the five others, so the drinks are on me as I head off to Singapore for their big races next weekend thanks to the profits from my BETDAQ account – how do I thank the layers lol?

Monday

Well I have friends involved with the owners of a horse called Grandorio and as they seemed pretty bullish about his chances in the 3.50pm at Doncaster despite a penalty and when you see how easily he won on his return you can understand why? Odds of 2.1 failed to be filed under I for Inspiring but as I have heard positives he will be my only bet on the racing this Monday (unsighted and wish I hadn’t bothered), though Brighton to beat Crystal Palace in the big grudge match tonight at BETDAQ odds of 1.9 looked worth it but with hindsight what do I know (-2 loss)?

Tuesday

Someone somewhere can possibly explain to me why there are more races over jumps than on the flat today (and I thought this was the flat season?), so as a protest of sorts, I will give the horses a miss today as I continue my trip to Singapore as paid for (accidentally of course), by the BETDAQ layers. Days like these remind me of the wonders of technology as I can bet, watch, and (possibly) collect via my tablet as long as I can get a good wi fi signal and touch wood, I have had no issues so far. Arsenal will surely beat Wigan however hard they may fight, while the Manchester City players should realise they are effectively playing for their places when the new manager arrives so an odds on double (1.45 and 1.7 respectively) will do for me today. While I am in odds on mode a Basketball double on Indiana pacers (1.5) and San Antonio Spurs (1.35) needed adding to the mix with both bets giving me something to do at the airport.

Wednesday

As you may have noted I am busy travelling so nice to log on and see that my odds on doubles both came off yesterday – more to play with while I am away! With time at a premium it makes sense to drop back to the old reliable favourite chasing today, though as mentioned before, I only do this in handicaps as that seems to ensure that a winner is priced well enough to cover previous losses and keeps my staking in sensible proportions. Despite spending my valuable time writing down all the handicaps in race time order my first bet won at odds of 4.2 (First Mohican, 1.45pm York) and that was that for the day with my stop at a winner concept, though I was sorely tempted to start all over again though that could be seen as plain greedy!

Thursday

After heading to the track early doors to watch the horses working (not sure why, but it was an opportunity I had to take), I sat down at breakfast (Wi-fi is wonderful) to work out my horses and any other bets to place on my by now overflowing BETDAQ account. I don’t like to try and be smart (it doesn’t suit me), but I do know that Nigel Twiston-Davies is renowned for his strike rate at Perth, so why his son Sam riding at Ludlow? Sam Magern was the answer at odds of 5.8 so that was a winner for me, but a second and a third (backed to win of course) made a bit of a dent in those pennies but failed to take them all away. Basketball was added to the list with a small double on the New York Knicks (1.5) and the San Antonio Spurs (1.85) though to be honest I am not exactly confident this time around and with no football that interests me, that will do me for today though as then results aren’t in as I go to press we can all be on tenterhooks (especially me)…

Conclusions:
Bet of the week – Basketball – looks like I chose the correct threesome for a change (?) with the one losing favourite in four matches the only one I left alone to land a 3.6 treble on BETDAQ to chunky stakes as well.
Disaster of the week – Main Sequence – all the talk turned out to be exactly that, why do I listen….?

Something for the weekend:
Despite being in Singapore over the weekend, the old tablet will be broken out for a bet at Newmarket this weekend starting with Dundonnell in the 3.30pm, a Listed race over seven furlongs. Trained by Roger Charlton I am willing to guess that he needed his reappearance run when third behind Toronado in the Craven Stakes. Although the winner failed to run as expected in the 2000 Guineas, that is still decent form as far as I can tell and more than good enough to win this hopefully, though he does carry a penalty which will not make life any easier (and explains the single point bet)?

On the football front, what will I do once the season is over, but before then we have some important matches in the eyes of the beholders at least. The first of the play offs takes place on Saturday when I narrowly prefer Bradford over Northampton at BETDAQ odds of 2.6 and they look worthy of a point. On Sunday I am more confident (famous last words) about Brentford beating Yeovil (2.4) and then we get to the last day of the Premier league. The best bet for me has to be Manchester United to win their last game under Sir Alex Ferguson away to West Bromwich Albion who in turn have nothing to play for, and odds of 2.0 looks like a steal and well worth a bet. Whether Everton can do the same at Chelsea for David Moyes is available at 5.6 but I will not jinx my team, and the three bets will do for me this weekend.

This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):

Horse racing Saturday
1pt Win Dundonnell 3.30pm Newmarket

Weekend Football
1pt Bradford to beat Northampton at 2.6
1pt Brentford to beat Yeovil at 2.4
2pts Manchester United to beat West Bromwich Albion at 2.0
