TOTTENHAM V CHELSEA

8pm Once again the Premier League have saved the best until last for the midweek fixture list as Spurs host Chelsea on Thursday night. There’s a huge amount of talking points here, and it’s fair to say neither club are where they want to be this season. It feels like months and months ago that both were deemed “title challengers” in the early part of the season; after the weekend fixtures they sat beside each other in 6th and 7th seemingly out of the race even for a top four finish.

Both sides have the exact same number of points, however Spurs do have a game in hand. I don’t think that is worth much however given they will be without Harry Kane for a while with injury. He got injury in the game against Liverpool and the xG figures have been very worrying. They only created 0.11 against Liverpool which is one of the lowest xG’s in the Premier League this season and then only 0.44 away to Brighton while conceding 1.77. I thought they were very a small gamble at big odds against Brighton at the weekend, but after seeing that game I would be very worried for them without Kane.

You have to also think about what kind of reaction Jose Mourinho will have – perhaps it’s a good thing we can’t have normal press conferences at the moment with Covid19. We have seen things go wrong quickly when Mourinho has found himself in this situation before, and it will be fascinating to see what happens with Spurs over the next few weeks. Chelsea got their first win after Frank Lampard was sacked at the weekend against Burnley – they didn’t play too impressively, but they got the job done.

Both sides clearly have a number of issues at the moment and I think if they were playing any other side you’d lean against them at the moment. I feel Chelsea will come out on top tonight, but they look very short at 2.22 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. I can understand the market – who wants to be on Spurs at the moment – and I don’t want to lay Chelsea either, but the 2.22 isn’t for me.

Both Teams Not To Score is tempting at 2.05, as both haven’t really created many chances lately. I would have that price marginally odds on rather than marginally odds against. This is a game for reasonably low stakes for me as either side inspire confidence but I do like under 2.5 goals at 1.9. Spurs will really struggle without Kane – we see that now – and Mourinho could easily block out Chelsea with negative tactics. Neither side have been impressive going forward and we could see a pretty boring game here.

The Striker Says:
Two points win Under 2.5 goals at 1.9 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange

MATCH STATS

  • Tottenham have lost two of their last three home league games against Chelsea (W1), more than they had in their previous 11 (W5 D5 L1). They haven’t lost consecutive home league games against the Blues since a run of three between April 2004-August 2005.
  • Chelsea are unbeaten in their last four Premier League meetings with Spurs (W3 D1), keeping a clean sheet in three of these games.
  • Despite being the only side still unbeaten in Premier League London derbies this season, Spurs have won just one of their five such matches so far this term (D4).
  • Chelsea have lost four of their last five away league games (W1), as many as they had in their previous 16 on the road (W7 D5).
  • Last time out, Thomas Tuchel became the first Chelsea manager to keep a clean sheet in each of his first two Premier League games in charge since Rafael Benitez in November 2012. The last Chelsea manager to do so in his first three in the competition was José Mourinho in August 2004.
  • Tottenham Hotspur lost their last home Premier League game versus Liverpool (1-3) – they haven’t lost consecutive home games since January 2019, while manager José Mourinho has never lost consecutive home games in the competition.
  • Tottenham manager José Mourinho hasn’t won any of his last six meetings with Chelsea in all competitions (D3 L3). Only against Barcelona (7 between April 2011-January 2012) has he had a longer winless run against an opponent in his managerial career.
  • Just two of Chelsea’s 17 Premier League managers have lost their first ever London derby in the competition (W9 D6), with Guus Hiddink losing 0-1 at Spurs in March 2009 and Andre Villas-Boas 0-1 at QPR in October 2011.
  • Spurs were one of three English teams Thomas Tuchel had faced before becoming Chelsea manager, along with Liverpool and Manchester United, all in European matches. Tuchel won both of his Europa League matches against Spurs in March 2016 as Borussia Dortmund manager, winning both legs of the last 16 of that season’s tournament.
  • Tottenham have won just three of their last 13 Premier League games in which Harry Kane has not featured (D4 L6), including none of their last four (D1 L3). Indeed, one of those last four winless matches without Kane was against Chelsea, a 1-2 defeat in February 2020.
