PURPLE PATCH: It’s Superbowl Sunday this weekend and the Kansas City Chiefs enter the game as both defending champions and favourites, making them an ideal fit for this week’s Purple Patch.

Kansas City Chiefs

Sunday’s Super Bowl sees history made as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers become the first side ever to play a Super Bowl in their own stadium as they host the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s a contest being billed as the battle of the quarterbacks as Tom Brady, seeking a seventh Super Bowl, faces off against Patrick Mahomes – a man tipped to follow in his counterpart’s footsteps.

A quarterback is the most important cog in any successful football team and Mahomes is no different. Alongside coach Andy Reid, he has masterminded a dominant three-season stretch for the Chiefs which has seen them conquer virtually all before them.

Their imperious spell is the topic of this week’s Purple Patch.

Since the start of the 2018 season, the Chiefs have played 55 games in the NFL and have won a staggering 44 of them. Reid has put together an offense which, through the brilliance of Mahomes, has left opposition defenses quaking in their boots as Tampa Bay put up a plethora of points time and time again.

They have been defeated just 11 times in that period and their fine form has seen them reach the AFC Championship game in 2018, before back-to-back Super Bowl appearances in the past two seasons.

The highlight was, of course, their win in last season’s Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers, but they haven’t settled for that and they are back again in search of a famous double.

If they could complete the feat, they’d become just the eighth side in history to win back-to-back Super Bowls and with the likes of Mahomes and Tyreek Hill – their top touchdown scorer this season – on their roster, it would take a brave man to suggest they won’t do it again.
