Such was Jordan Spieth’s incredible 1st round at Augusta yesterday that as he stood on the Par 5 15th tee box, the golfing world was whispering of at that moment very breakable Masters and Majors records – The first ever -10 par round in major history and the first man to shoot a 62 around Augusta’s hallowed grounds.

Unfortunately Spieth overshot green on 15 costing him a stroke and he’d ultimately sign for an almost blemish free 64, including 11 one putts. His outstanding display has shifted the Exchange market significantly with him now trading at just 3.2 on BETDAQ from a matched high of 17.5 early yesterday afternoon. Early Spieth backers can already be rewarded with a locked in profit by laying him today at a much shorter 3.45, considering the stellar cast that will now breath heavily down his neck.

Golf is one of the most rewarding (and lucrative) markets on the Exchange, combining a classic buy low sell high strategy and having all of 4 days to examine and tweak your positions. Here’s our trading team’s best trades of yesterday and smart moves for today:

1. Charley Hoffman

A regular birdie machine (albeit often littered with mistakes) on the PGA Tour, Charley hit the first shot of the Masters when the course was at it’s most receptive. He matched on the Exchange at a whopping 375.0 and was backed into as low as 40.0 as he stormed to -5. We then saw a significant number of lays placed at around 46.0 as plenty of shrewd movers saw greater value here and any initial backers of Hoffman will have cashed in a significant sum no matter what the outcome for the rest of the week.

Friday’s Move – Hold off on any pre-tee off movement and hope for a fast start from Hoffman, if he can get to -7 or so he should be available at a relatively low laying risk considering the legs still left in this year’s Masters still has.

2. Ernie Els

Not often a 2-time major champion of the pedigree of Ernie can be matched at a high of 445.0 on the Exchange on Masters week but that’s exactly what happened. Even into the early afternoon after a solid start you could still back Ernie at well over 150.0. Ernie now sits in T2 trading at 45.0 to back and 48.0 to lay. If you’d matched Ernie yesterday at 445.0 for £10 to win £4450 you could now lay him for £80 at 48.0 leaving you £610 up if he wins and £70 up if he loses.

Friday’s Move – Ernie’s putter is behaving itself and he’s ball striking has been impressive. An early start today at 1:40pm GMT means he is the first of the leaders out there and there is no reason why he can’t kick on with a 33 or 34 front 9 which will see his price likely shortened to 30.0 or less. Back Ernie at 45.0

3. Rory McIlroy

It was a difficult start for the World No.1 yesterday as birdies were hard to come by posting just 3, 2 of which coming on the fairly straight forward par 5 13th and 15th. His initial 7.2 starting price has drifted out to 12.0 this morning and while that’s not much of a swing to be taken advantage of, the market will be terrified of him if he starts strongly on Friday and if there’s a chink in Spieth’s armour on his front 9 tomorrow you would expect that 12.0 to be gobbled up.

Friday’s Move – It’s all dependent on Rory’s flat stick but if that part of his game appears, 12.0 could be his highest price this week. Back McIlroy at 12.0

4. Justin Rose

Another man to have a fine opening round, posting a 67 for T2. Rose has a Masters Top 5 from 2007 and also led the first round in the fledgling year of his career however we’re not convinced of his ability to hit enough greens this week to stay at the sharp end. Rose was available pre-tournament at a high of 59.0 and matched down as low as 11.0 as he reached the clubhouse -5. Most of the money on Rose on the Exchange in Day One have been lay bets and we’d agree there’s no potential in following of the crowd here.

Friday’s Move – Currently available to lay at 15.0 we think there’s too much quality around him in the Win Market and this is smart option to regroup or incrementally improve your position on Day 2.

That’s all from us for now, the first shots of Day 2 will be hit at 12:45pm by Ian Woosnam and it’s bound to be another day to savour.
