Defeat for England tonight doesn’t necessarily spell the end of their World Cup hopes such are the numerous mathematical permutations of Group D, but let’s face it if you lose your first two games you don’t really deserve to progress.
In odds terms, it’s around an even money chance on BETDAQ that England will progress past the Group stage of the World Cup which started for them with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Italy. Whilst the result was negative, there were plenty of positives to take out of the England performance with good attacking football from the outset.
The exception was Wayne Rooney, deployed on the left, who had a shocking game. It’s the biggest match of Roy Hodgson’s career tonight and the first key decision he has to make is whether to keep faith with Rooney who has now gone nine World Cup games without scoring.
Uruguay were disappointing in their opener against Costa Rica (2.42 to qualify from the Group on BETDAQ) but will take heart from the expected return of striker Luis Suarez has been declared fit to play following knee surgery.
England have a habit of never making things easy. However, on the sole evidence of what we saw in the opening games, 2.1 for an England win looks a tempter.
