LEADING LIGHT: Was the bright spot on a tougher day for SHAMROCK on Thursday. He’s back looking at the Irish challenge on the fourth day of the meeting today and has two bets on the card.
Well, as predicted, it was the day for Aidan O’Brien to get off the mark yesterday. It’s just not exactly how I predicted him doing it 🙁
Leading Light (my next best) was a thrilling winner of the Gold Cup, although there was a sting in the tail for Joseph O’Brien who was banned for seven days and fined £3,000.
The big disappointment of the day was The Great War in the opener who was a bitterly disappointing fifth and was one of the first to come under pressure.
2:30 Albany Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (2yo, Class 1, 6f, 21 runners)
Just the one Irish challenger in the opener. Sexy Legs, who was beaten just a nose on debut behind Jeanne Girl at the Curragh and is entitled to improve, but the third in the race, Red Ivy, was subsequently well beaten in a Listed race and the form may not be strong enough in the context of this race.
3:05 Wolferton Handicap (Listed) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m 2f, 13 runners)
Again, just the one Irish raider, and again no bet from me. Aidan O’Brien’s Hall Of Mirrors looks on quite a high mark. His only career success so far in seven starts came in a Gowran Park nursery and he finished tailed off last of five in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last time out. Whilst this is a drop in class, it’s probably more of Group 3 line-up than the official Listed class and I think Hall Of Mirrors still has plenty to prove.
3:45 King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 4f, 9 runners)
Time for a bet! I’m with Aidan O’Brien here with Adelaide. He impressed when winning the Group 3 Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh last time out staying on in good style suggesting that the extra two furlongs will be ideal here. He remains unexposed and hopefully will handle the faster ground.
16:25 Coronation Stakes (British Champions Series) (Fillies’ Group 1) (Rnd) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 12 runners)
I got it wrong in opposing Bracelet yesterday, mainly on the basis of her poor show in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket when only 14th. Well Tapestry did even worse, and finished last of the 17 runners. Can she also bounce back to form? The better play though has to be with the John Oxx trained My Titania who won the C.L. Weld Park Stakes, a Group 3, at the Curragh as a two-year-old and makes her seasonal debut here. The daughter of Sea The Stars has always been held in the highest regard but missed the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket with a dirty scope and then also by-passed the Irish equivalent because of the soft ground. No such worries today.
5:00 Queen’s Vase (Listed) (3yo, Class 1, 2m, 11 runners)
The race won by Leading Light last season and Aidan O’Brien runs Century this year. He looks the sort to be suited by the fast ground but I am struggling to make a form case for him after his fourth in the Dee Stakes at Chester. The extra distance will surely suit him but you would be backing him solely on the trainer factor rather than the form factor and there are too many question marks for me to get involved at around 6 on BETDAQ.
5:35 Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap) (3yo+, Class 2, 7f, 28 runners)
Bubbly Bellini is in good form but will surely struggle in this level?
