NO IRISH RACING TODAY: SHAMROCK wonders whether the successful launch of the Tapeta racing surface at Wolverhampton might catch the eye of Irish racecourses?
Dundalk have held a monopoly on Irish horse racing since they reopened in 2007 and by all accounts it has been hugely successful.
Good crowds attend (especially on their ‘trademarked’ Friday night fixtures) and the races themselves are often over subscribed.
And if eight races on the all-weather aren’t enough for you punters out there, Dundalk often add a greyhound card at the end of the meeting too!
Wolverhampton launched their new Tapeta racing surface yesterday, the surface which is the brainchild of former jumps training maestro Michael Dickinson and it seems to have won instant and universal approval (something quite rare in the world of racing).
Tapeta is already used at Meydan and on many training establishments around the globe and despite riding slow at the inaugural meeting yesterday has won praise for the minimal amount of kick back.
Hopefully, Ireland will have a second all-weather track soon, although there are no plans in the immediate pipeline. You can’t help but think with such a huge horse population that there wouldn’t be a demand for at least one more AW track, Not to mention keeping the racing show on the road through the winter period.
Plans for a new AW track at Tipperary have stalled and there was also rumours of a new AW track at Down Royal but as yet nothing.
Surely this has to change at some point ?
