WOW, what a night it was though in Shelbourne Park on Sunday night with some superb performances at such an early stage of this 2014 Irish Greyhound Derby.
Mind The Net clocked a dashing 29.49
Laughil Blake went round in a blistering time of 29.43
Vanfrankie was impressive doing 29.55
It just doesn’t get any better than this. Or does it? That’s what I love about the Derby, the unprecedented results, dramatic finishes, shocking exits, screaming punters on the stand, sweaty bookies and ecstatic owners and trainers cheering their dogs home.
There was a great crowd last night in the Park. I made my way over a tad late as I got stuck in work and parked my little Micra up and strolled inside. Mam and Dad were there as Band Major was running for us and he qualified for the next round thankfully. We sat with May Kearns and Mickey O’Reilly and the crack was mighty as we started to talk about Brendan Grace and Mickey came out with the following:
An Irishman, is stumbling through the woods, totally drunk, when he
Comes upon a preacher baptising people in the river.
He proceeds to walk into the water and subsequently bumps into the preacher.
The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of
Alcohol, whereupon he asks the drunk,
‘Are you ready to find Jesus?’
The drunk shouts, ‘Yes, oi am.’
So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water.
He pulls him up and asks the drunk, ‘Brother have you found Jesus?’
The drunk replies, ‘No, oi haven’t found Jesus.’
The preacher shocked at the answer, dunks him into the water again for
A little longer.
He again pulls him out of the water and asks again, ‘Have you found
Jesus me brother?’
The drunk again answers, ‘No,oi I haven’t found Jesus.’
By this time the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the drunk in
The water again —
But this time holds him down for about 30 seconds and when he begins
Kicking his arms and legs he pulls him up.
The preacher again asks the drunk, ‘For the love of God have you found Jesus?’
(Are you ready for this????)
The drunk wipes his eyes and catches his breath and says to the
Preacher, ‘Are you sure dis is where he fell in?’
Moving on swiftly………… Plenty of other dogs stood out last night other than the obvious ones. Sidaz Pedro, Green Prince, European Queen, Vulturi the list goes on. I cannot believe Laughil Blake was 6/4 last night, I had a cheeky bet on him, he was my only bet of the night and he came up trumps! He is trading 16/1 outright on the BETDAQ exchange and could be the one. Mind The Net is 11/1 and Vanfrankie & Vimmerby both 18/1 to mention a few. GET INVOLVED!!
When all the racing had concluded we decided to go upstairs to the draw. There was an array of sambos and tea and coffee was provided. Kevin Hennessy was there in his tin of fruit (suit!) as was Ted Hegarty. Michael and Ian Fortune, Declan Carey, Patrick Flynn, Larry O’Shea and a few others. You can find the draw on Talking Dogs.
2 heats stand out to me for Thursday night
Heat 6
1 Fordeflag
2 Vimmerby
3 General Wolf
4 Sidaz Pedro
5 Vanfrankie
6 Millridge Leader (w)
Vimmerby is the one to beat here. For an inside runner he ran brilliantly from trap 5 last week and there was no catching him in 29.66 with a 3.45 split. Sidaz Pedro is a strong finisher but I think General Wolf might have the edge and is running very consistently and Millridge Leader is the only wide seed in the race and ticks all the boxes Vanfrankie is very far out in trap 5 but I dont think that will matter as he has serious pace.. My prediction is 2-5-6
Heat 7
1 Kisses For Cloda
2 Emers Superstar
3 Highview Ranger
4 Ivy Hill Prince
5 Jacks Ace (w)
6 Tyrur Nathan (w)
Emers Superstar had great pace into the first bend in her first heat and passed Indigo Jack on the home run for first place in 29.92 with a split of 3.40. I think she will lead this race with Jacks Ace chasing in behind and Tyrur Nathan in third. Nathan powered home last week and would of won the race if he had taken the last bend tighter. Kisses For Cloda has great early but he moved into the middle on his last run and I think he has too much early beside him in trap 2. My prediction is 2-5-6.
So there you have it, hope to see you all Thursday night for more drama and thrilling racing!
Over and out..
Thanks,
Sarah
