CHAMPAGNE POPPING AT CLONMEL?: A fascinating renewal of the Clonmel Oil Chase this afternoon which sees Champagne Fever and Sizing Europe clash.

Champagne Fever against Sizing Europe in what should prove a head-to-head – certainly according to the BETDAQ market which has Champagne Fever at 1.85, Sizing Europe at 3.1 and 11 bar.
If you are considering backing Champagne Fever at odds-on surely you will hesitate a little on the pre-race quotes from trainer Willie Mullins.
He has warned us that Champagne Fever is likely to ‘need the run’. Mullins said: “On the ratings, we might have a few pounds in hand, but I imagine our fellow might need the run. If we get the tactics right with him, hopefully he will improve into the horse we thought he was and showed at Cheltenham two years ago.”
That Cheltenham race, two years ago, was the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in which he made all the running to deny My Tent Or Yours. He went on to make a winning chasing debut but has been beaten in three subsequent starts – going down by just a head to surprise package Western Warhorse in the Arkle at the Festival earlier this year.
Sizing Europe won this in 2012 and came out of ‘retirement’ to win the PWC Champion Chase at Gowran Park first time out this season in a pulsating finish.
Sizing Europe has to concede 11lb to Champagne Fever which might well be a bridge too far but you never know with the old boy and with the fitness advantage, the concerns about Champagne Fever’s own level of fitness on reappearance and most importantly the prices I have to be with Sizing Europe.
