12-1 TRIAL WIN AT BETDAQ 15.0: Daqman had the layers seeing red at Newbury yesterday, when a little bird told him Redstart (WON 12-1) was the dark filly of the Fred Darling Classic trial at 15.0 morning offers on BETDAQ.

SPRING CUP SECOND AT 20.0: While Pricewise scored with a big-hitter, Daqman claimed the place part of another long-odds punt, his each-way bet on Spark Plug (2nd 16-1) at 20.0 on BETDAQ for the Newbury Spring Cup. Flat-season totals are now Daqman 13, Pricewise 4.

BETDAQ 10.0 CABLE BAY TAKEN WITH GLADNESS

2.20 The Curragh Despite weight woes, Joseph O’Brien has four Ballydoyle rides today, hoping to improve on a dismal 7% strike-rate (2-27 this year), where once he used to cruise on 27%.

He opens on Waterloo Bridge, speed-bred on the dam’s side, with the Invincible Spirit filly, Mimicking, the likely threat, helped by her 5lb sex allowance.

2.50 The Curragh Dermot Weld (Sugar Mill) has been plundering these three-year-olds maidens, and he’s 13-33 with the age group (39%) this season.

But I reckon Glimmer Of Peace, Shanghai Beauty and Penny Pepper are all three better bred for this sprint, with Shanghai Beauty getting my vote for in-form trainer Ken Condon.

3.20 The Curragh A poor turn-out after last year’s 20-runner field, despite an increase in prizemoney.

The Dublin stables that scored with Cash or Casualty at 14-1 just 15 days back has since landed a 33-1 scorer at Dundalk.

And today’s offers for Cash or Casualty are again double figures on BETDAQ this morning (10.5), presumably because that big-odds win was over 7f and came on heavy ground.

But Beau Satchel and Elusive In Paris, both ahead of him in the market, have both won only at 7f and 1m, never at this sprint trip.

In fact, the sprinter in the field is Our Jock, who has been knocking at the door recently and will enjoy the drying ground.

3.50 The Curragh (Gladness Stakes) Four-year-olds are on a five-timer in this today, and all of that age group here are capable on the ratings of winning this.

Due Diligence, second in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, would prefer quicker ground and a furlong shorter.

Sruthan won this last year in a first-time hood but the headgear has not been so effective since, and is left off today.

Dermot Weld reaches for first-time blinkers on Alkasser – CD winner in the Tetrarch last Spring – after his defeat at odds on at Tipperary recently.

Of the English raiders, Cable Bay travels over with stable confidence after Charles Hills landed the Greenham. Dewhurst runner-up on good to soft, Cable Bay returned to form, second in the Group-2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket last backend.

If Sovereign Debt, campaigned on AW over the winter, could bounce back to his Lockinge second of two years ago, he would be a big threat but I’ll take the 10.0 Cable Bay win and place.

4.20 The Curragh (Alleged Stakes) It’s eight years now since Dylan Thomas opened his King George winning season with this one in the bag.

Beresford winner here, Geoffrey Chaucer was thought to be of that ilk until he flopped as a three-year-old, including stone last in the Epsom Derby.

But he’s still rated within a pound (and receives 5lb) of the 2013 Alleged winner, Parish Hall, who really needs the ground to dry out completely by this time in the afternoon.

Massinga has already won a Listed and seems to be on the upgrade for the man in form, Dermot Weld, but – as befits a Selkirk – has done the business on soft ground.

I simply don’t know over my cornflakes whether the forecast sunshine will scupper her chances and play into Parish Hall’s hands or whether the surface will remain easy enough for her.

The fact remains that, at my distance from the race I can get 5.1 a top-rated Group winner, Parish Hall, against half that for Massinga.

NAP: The Presenting mare She’s Da One (4.10 Wincanton) seems to have been found a good opportunity to return to winning form on her home track.
