DAQMAN MANS IT UP AT 7-1: There was no big double for Daqman at Epsom yesterday but the meeting’s bets were paid for early with Monumental Man (WON 7-1) and there was no score in the Daqman v Pricewise challenge.
TODAY: DAQMAN GOES FOR BOTH CODES: Flat and Jumps Racing are the order of the day as far as Daqman is concerned as he scans the meetings at Perth and Warwick over the sticks and at Beverley on the level.
ELLIOTT TO FOLLOW UP, UP NORTH
Gordon Elliott opened with a winner yesterday. Antilope Du Seuil was a very good winner of the first for the Irish visiting party with Daryl Jacob in the saddle.
Elliott may need to wait for the final race to notch up another success today and with Eshtiaal, that should bring him back to the winners enclosure.
The former Brian Meehan inmate was twice a winner on the flat in Britain and, despite being a big price, he finished just 10 lengths adrift of Arab Spring at Royal Ascot. His form over hurdles has been slightly patchy at best but last time out at Wexford his jumping cost him when slow two out but he ran on well to go down by just half a length. Realistically it could have been more but for his flat speed.
He is today’s Nap and the Irish man will surely have done plenty of schooling with the son of Dynaformer and it’s difficult to see him being beaten.
Earlier on the card, the Handicap Hurdle at 3.20 is a intriguing race. Another of Elliott’s is high on the betting with Tom’s Article bidding to put a poor run behind him, having won a Maiden previously. Although he appears to have a solid chance, this may not be the day.
Instead I’m looking to the father and son team of Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies who saddle Foxtail Hill.
He won a Maiden nicely back in October and the form has been franked since. Although finishing last of six in Cheltenham doesn’t look great in his subsequent run, that was in a really good race that Vyta Du Roc and he was simply outclassed.
He did bounce back since the turn of the year with a good third place behind the progressive Bombadero at Ludlow and his mark of 130 could be open to further improvement. Foxtail Hill could be hard to catch.
OPENING JEWEL AT WARWICK
I have just one selection for Wawick. In the opening race, Nicky Henderson saddles What A Jewel to be partnered by Nico De Boinville. The Leading Conditional rider is vying for the Championship in that division with Sean Bowen and Henderson will surely be doing all in his powers to give him the best opportunity to get over the line.
Aside from the enviable position of possibly riding Sprinter Sacre on Saturday, regardless of the horses current form this is a great ride to get, he should be able to add to his tally in this Handicap Hurdle.
Better ground should be a big plus for the Presenting mare and she should be more that capable of scoring in this one off a mark of 115.
STOUTE & JOHNSTON FOR BEVERLEY WINNERS
Two selections on the flat at Beverley today. Although there are only five runners at 3.00 over seven furlongs, it looks like being a very competitive race and not much separates the top three in the betting.
Bow And Arrow was a winner for this column a few weeks back but only just getting in front on the line at Lingfield. It may be that he needs slightly further on his return to the turf but he has a good attitude and is sure to play a hand in the finish.
Enlace has a similar story for Mark Johnston. Some good All Weather form but may be best watched back on the grass.
Sir Michael Stoute’s Pleiades is the one they will have to beat in my eyes. An opening mark of 84 is lenient following his win over course and distance back in September. The Galileo colt is sure to improve over further in time but he showed enough speed in winning previously to say that this trip is still suitable.
The following race over a mile and a half is another very competitive race. Eight runners go to post and it’s the Mark Johnston runner, Leaderene that has caught my attention most.
She was a course and distance winner last season off a mark of 72 and ran well next time to finish fourth up in class. She finished the season with a below par run at Newmarket but that can possibly be discounted due to the ground being softer than ideal.
Back on a sound surface this afternoon, Leaderene looks the one to beat.
