SOLID START FOR SHAMROCK: 3 winning bets from 6 on Monday including his NAP – TRUE SOLITAIRE WON 6/4. That makes it 5 WINNING NAPS from the last 7 – and all have been odds against.

A pleasing start to the Galway Festival on Monday and an easy win for the nap True Solitaire at 6/4.

Thursday: TANAZA (NAP) WON 7/4
Friday: PEACE MISSION (NAP) WON 7/4
Saturday: LOSER

Monday: TRUE SOLITAIRE (NAP) WON 6/4

John Moloney, manager at Galway, tweeted this morning that the ground is now good on the jumps track and yielding on the flat course with nothing more than showers forecast.

Again, it’s a seven race card – and we’re underway at 5.15pm

5:15 Topaz Novice Hurdle (4yo+, 2m, 9 runners)

Bachasson (my tip and also DAQMAN’s NAP) romped home in the opener yesterday for Willie Mullins and he introduces another potential star here with Long Dog who, like Bachasson, was a winner at Sligo last time out. Long Dog stormed home by 12 lengths on his hurdling debut at Sligo despite making a few errors early in the race. The drying ground should be in his favour and he is hard to look beyond in the opener.

5:45 Latin Quarter Beginners Chase (4yo+, 2m 2f 54y, 16 runners)

A 16 runner beginners chase doesn’t make a great deal of appeal to me as a betting medium I have to say but to be fair this race has attracted a whole host of former useful hurdlers. These include Guitar Pete who was a dual Grade 1 winner and third in the Triumph at the Cheltenham Festival. It’s hard to predict his current well-being given he has been off the track for 270 days. Steps To Freedom already has a fair bit of chasing experience but has yet to win and has been costly for punters to follow. However he looks a decent bet on the BETDAQ place market here

6:15 Topaz E.B.F. Fillies Maiden (2yo, 7f, 10 runners)

The first flat race of the night and in this race last year David Wachman broke the recent Weld / O’Brien monopoly when he won it with the future Newmarket 1000 Guineas winner Legatissimo. All three stables are represented again but the danger to all might be the Jim Bolger trained Siamsaiocht who was a good second on debut at the Curragh to Alice Springs (Kind Of Magic finished 5th) who went on to finish second to Tanaza in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown.

6:50 Topaz Mile Handicap (Premier Handicap) (3yo+, 1m 73y, 14 runners)

You get the feeling that Ger Lyons might want to win this with four runners including the three at the top of the weights. I quite like the chances of his grey Unsinkable who was only pipped last time out at Navan and comes here in good form. Dermot Weld has the obvious danger in Stay De Night who was a close third in a Naas Listed race last time out and has the scope for further improvement.

7:20 Caulfieldindustrial.com E.B.F. Maiden (3yo+, 7f, 14 runners)

Another race dominated by the Weld stable. He runs Valac here who so far has been a friend of the layers with defeats at 8/11, 4/7 and 2/1. I’m not sure that I want to be going in at short odds again and prefer the chances of the Jessie Harrington trained Unyielding who led for a long way on debut and should be suited by the drop back in trip.

7:50 Caulfield Industrial Athlone Handicap (50-80) (4yo+, 7f, 19 runners)

This looks by far and away the toughest puzzle for punters to solve. Bobby Jean has been running well including a win at the Curragh but that came on heavy ground and she may be in trouble if the ground dries up further. Lady Ranger is a tentative place selection after a good effort when runner-up at Ayr last time out.

8:20 Caulfieldindustrial.com Handicap (55-80) (3yo+, 2m, 16 runners)

The early money has arrived for Heartbreak City who is having his first run on the flat since 2013. He is extremely lightly raced and had the perfect warm-up for this when third over hurdles at Killarney earlier this month. Very much looks a Tony Martin ‘project’ and I’m onboard. Benkei makes a quick reappearance after a disappointing second of four when favourite at Leopardstown last Thursday.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
5.15 Long Dog
5.45 Steps To Freedom (PLACE)
6.15 Siamsaiocht (NAP)
6.50 Unsinkable (WIN and PLACE)
7.20 Unyielding (NEXT BEST)
7.50 Lady Ranger (PLACE)
8.20 Heartbreak City
