‘HIDDEN HORSE’ WINS AT 7-1: Daqman yesterday nominated Heartbreak City (WON 7-1) as the ‘Hidden Horse’ of the opening day of the York Ebor Festival, and Tony Martin’s Irish raider duly obliged with an easy success.
22.0 OFFER A COVERT THREAT: Daqman was among the big prices this morning, taking offers of 22.0 and 19.0 on BETDAQ, including one in the Yorkshire Oaks against Covert Love. There are more Hidden Horses in the 3.05 handicap.
LIGHTING ON LUMIERE FOR THE LOWTHER
1.55 York Tasleet, who would give William Haggas a hat-trick in this, has a stone higher rating than the stable’s last two winners, dropping down three grades from his Group-2 second in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood to the John Gosden stunner Shalaa.
But there’s nothing between him and the Hannon horse Orvar on that one’s fifth to Shalaa at the July Meeting, and Tasleet is very close to Mr Lupton (through Madrinho).
That gives them all a lot to do with Lathom, who gave 8lb to Mr Lupton when winning the Super Sprint at Newbury, and he’s already won on good-to-soft ground.
Lathom got boxed in at Goodwood and another seeking to be forgiven the last run, Delizia, a winner at York over 5f, flopped at Royal Ascot but has had a long break since.
The Royal Ascot Racing Club had been hoping to see their colt Projection at the big meeting but the son of Acclamation, still green at Windsor late June, finally got the hang of things and sprinted clear back there on the last day.
I shall lay Tasleet at up to 3.0 and back both Projection (7.8 BETDAQ offers) and Lathom (12.5 win and place), with the intention of starting the day off with a Triple Whammy: win, place and lay.
2.30 York (Lowther Stakes) Last year’s winner doubled up in the Cheveley Park Stakes. Aimed for that from this field are Ashadihan, Besharah, Easton Angel, Lumiere and Quiet Reflection.
Lumiere was the business on BETDAQ this morning after her runaway win at the July Meeting from Fillies’ Mile entry Sharja Queen who franked the form at Ffos Las.
Ashadihan was beaten a length and half by Illimunate in the Albany at Royal Ascot before Illuminate pipped Besharah a nose on the July course at Newmarket .
Besharah was reversing Queen Mary placings with Easton Angel that day and clearly, in this one and Tasleet, William Haggas has two big guns among his two-year-olds with very live chances today, but both are exposed and he may be pipped again in this one by Lumiere.
HAVE ‘BLINDS’ FAITH IN FRANKIE AT 19.0
3.05 York Only one horse older than four has won this in the decade. It’s four-year-olds 5, three-year-olds 3.
We need some kind of edge against the handicapper, who has seen this field run in a total of 99 races this year!
He should have them all covered but the age stat points up potential progress in the younger horses which he can’t account for.
You’re Fired, for instance, could turn around York CD form with Birdman and Musaddas, after getting too far behind that day. But he’s got to find something on past form with Mange All, who hasn’t been seen since fifth in the Lincoln.
Mange All could make it third race lucky for William Haggas this afternoon. He’s No Saint won in first-time visor over the York CD last month, when he was allowed to lead.
But my man in the long grass tells me that there’s another ‘hidden horse’ here in Extremity, blinkered first time and with Frankie Dettori booked by one of the season’s trainer finds, Hugo ‘Covert Love’ Palmer: 19.0 on BETDAQ this morning. Has worked well in the blinds.
O’BRIEN FILLY IS OUTSTANDING AT 22.0
3.40 York (Yorkshire Oaks) Aidan O’Brien has won this three times since 2006 but all three had won an Epsom or Curragh Oaks, or both, whereas Outstanding and Easter have failed to win anything in the Pattern stronger than a Listed race, and both are stepped up in trip today.
The Oaks winner among today’s field is Covert Love, who beat Jack Naylor and Curvy for the Irish version, but I remind you that Covert Love came to that Oaks also from a Listed win and also stepping up two furlongs.
And there’s a line to form that points up O’Brien’s chances: Talmada, well adrift of his Wedding Vow in July – albeit giving weight – had run Covert Love to a length at Newcastle in June, giving even more weight.
The lightly-raced Outstanding, a crazy 22.0 on BETDAQ this morning, and who will bid to emulate her sister Magician in the Breeders Cup, went over for the Belmont Oaks and was a respectable third, despite very firm ground.
Another potential improver is Sea Calisi, a Group-2 winner, though the form, through Kataniya and Jazzi Top, gives her plenty to find with English and Irish fillies.
4.20 York (Galtres Stakes) Three-year-olds have won six of the last eight, and Koora (8.4 offers taken on BETDAQ) is open to any amount of improvement in only her third start, and with the only other filly backed, Suffused, likely to set the target.
