CHAMPIONS-DAY DOUBLE WHAMMY! Daqman dared to lay the unplaced Gleneagles on Champions Day yesterday. The writing was on the wall as the Guineas winner drifted in favour of Daqman’s bet in the race, Solow (WON 11-10), his third winning nap in a row.
NINE SUCCESSIVE BANKERS UP: Solow was, in fact, his ninth consecutive winning banker, and was winning nap number 17 from 23. The banker sequence is:
WON 1-2 Shalaa (gold banker)
WON 10-11 Donna Graciosa (banker)
WON 5-6 Dark Emerald (banker)
WON 10-11 Kayla (banker)
WON 8-11 Vazirabad (banker)
WON 5-6 Quiet Reflection (banker)
WON 5-6 Best In The World (banker)
WON 1-4 Don Cossack (gold banker)
WON 11-10 Solow (banker)
FIVE CONSECUTIVE LAYS LANDED: Gleneagles (unplaced 9-4) was his fifth consecutive winning lay, as follows:
WIN Bathos (unplaced 4-1)
WIN Grendisar (4th 9-4 favourite)
WIN Zebstar, place lay (unplaced 12-1)
WIN Cameraman (2nd 9-4 favourite)
WIN Gleneagles (unplaced 9-4)
MASTER PLACE BET AT 20.0 ON BETDAQ: Pricewise was on the mark but Daqman made a profit in the same race from a place bet on Master The World (3rd 14-1 from 20.0 on BETDAQ) so that their winning bets challenge now tallies up as: Daqman 98, Pricewise 16 (overall 239-89).
FINGERS BURN ON HORSES ‘NOT AT THE RACES’
Don’t forget the punter! We need some proper explanation, even if sometimes mystery remains, about the below-par running of horses that have been heavily backed. This is an area which has long been allowed to slide.
There are very few, if any, stewards’ inquiries, certainly not made public, unless the they have something obvious discipline for jockeys (waving a cardboard wand called a whip or riding in their stockinged feet).
It seems to be left to Press reporters on the scene to have a go at finding answers, which are rarely followed up by the authorities. This is how the Racing Post sees yesterday’s flops:
Agent Murphy (9-2 joint favourite): Faded rapidly from three out. May have been feeling the effects of Curragh St Leger second.
Daqman says: There could be some truth in that, because his two previous wins came after long holidays.
Candarliya (9-2) Not travelling from quite a way out, and failed to give her running.
Daqman says: She was the first of two French flops yesterday (the other was Vadamos). She had every chance on form, after five wins and a second to Treve.
Gleneagles (9-4) Connections thought long and hard about letting him take his chance and it wasn’t hard to detect the reservations over the decision.
Daqman says: That’s one I got right before the race. The Guineas winner missed four big races because of the ground but it was also clear to see that the form of his successes were gradually slipping down the Pattern ladder to Group-2 level or worse as the year went on.
Strath Burn (10-1) Rider reported the colt stopped quickly and post-race examination found that he was lame on the left fore.
Daqman says: Thanks for that, Racing Post. Bitter-sweet for Charles Hills, who rates him highly but had the winner with the scintillating Muhaarar, whom I’d tipped in every outing until I decided to Burn my fingers yesterday.
Vadamos (8-1) Stopped quickly. Clearly wasn’t his true form. Daqman says: Never at the races, despite very bullish trainer.
How did I manage to get on three horses yesterday that didn’t give their running? Call me to Portman Square for an explanation!
CLASSY JO LOOKS SET TO EARN SOME BLACK TYPE
3.25 Naas We were not told what happened to Joailliere in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, a race which produced Pleascach, Found, Bocca Baciata, to name but a few, as they say. I guess the maiden-only winner tried to turn tricks too soon.
But Dermot Weld suggests today that it’s the ground has kept her away from a racecourse since. A crash down the grades to Listed level, plus watering of the track, should see her earn some black type here. Class horse of the day on the Flat.
RICHARD HUGHES’ CHANCE OF HIS FIRST WINNER
4.10 Bath Shamahan’s only handicap success came over this course and distance on this type of ground, and he’s a stone lower here, taking his rider’s claim into account.
Usually gets a good break, and I took a bit of 13.0 on BETDAQ for him to land Richard Hughes’s first winner as a trainer on the gelding’s second start since leaving Luke Dace.
4.45 Bath Scots Fern is being backed to get revenge on Pyla. Her saddle slipped when Pyla won over CD five weeks ago but she made up for it with a convincing win, returned to the scene on the last day: 4.7 BETDAQ offers.
MAPUTO COULD MAKE HURDLE NAME FOR HIMSELF
3.20 Kempton Maputo interrupted what turned out to be a treble chance for Regulation at Huntingdon, and this Group performer on the Flat should go on to better things.
Midnight Shot won two novices hurdles in the Spring, back to back by a total of 30 lengths, and Swansea Mile has already performed well at this Listed level.
San Benedeto had to wear a hood and a tongue-tie to make his presence felt in the Spring, and I’m surprised to see that he hasn’t had the usual Ditcheat wind op.
4.25 Kempton The New One will be unbackable here, even for a Diamond Banker, as he bids for a starting-off hat-trick in this Listed hurdle.
DAQMAN BETS (staked 1 to 9 for strength; 10 would be a banker)
BET 9pts win MAPUTO (3.20 Kempton)
BET 9pts win (nap) JOAILLIERE (3.25 Naas)
BET 2pts win and place SHAMAHAN (4.10 Bath)
BET 6pts win SCOTS FERN (4.45 Bath)
DAQ MULTIPLES: 4pts win treble MAPUTO (3.20 Kempton), JOAILLIERE (3.25 Naas) and THE NEW ONE (4.25 Kempton)
