NO IRISH RACING ON MONDAY: Racing resumes on Wednesday with the evening floodlit card from Dundalk. SHAMROCK looks back at Douvan’s impressive chasing debut yesterday.

A couple of days break in the Irish action until Dundalk on Wednesday.

It was hard not to be taken by the chasing debut from Douvan at Navan yesterday in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Beginners Chase.

The five-year-old was sent off the 2/11 favourite and made all the running to win by nine and a half lengths without having to be pushed out at all by Ruby Walsh. His only mistake of note came at the final fence at which he guessed a bit.

Winner of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival earlier in the year he remains unbeaten and trainer Willie Mullins said after yesterday’s race: “”He jumped well – I don’t think we learned anything except that he’s able to jump fences.”

“He was fairly well forward, but he’s a big, angular horse and doesn’t carry a lot of condition.”

“The Racing Post (Novice Chase) at Leopardstown would look the next race. I don’t think we’ve got time to put another run in. He’ll probably just have a good schooling session somewhere.”

Douvan is quoted at 7/4 clear market favourite with Ladbrokes for the Arkle in March.
