LOOKING FORWARD TO WEEKEND’S RACING: It has been another pretty quiet week of racing this week, but we have some excellent racing ahead this weekend from all over the world. I will be looking at Wolverhampton, Southwell, Cheltenham and further afield.
MY WOLVERHAMPTON PICKS
I am going to start off by looking at tonight’s racing at Wolverhampton where I have a couple of picks that I really like to do the job. I am looking at Walk Like a Giant, it is being ridden by Jane Elliot this evening who won on the horse the last time out. He is going without penalty for winning the race as it was an apprentice race. As well as that, Jane was only carrying 5 pounds in the last race whereas she is carrying 7 this time around. On top of all that he is already a course and distance winner, so I really think he is a good pick in this one.
ANOTHER BIG WEEKEND IN HONG KONG
I wanted to look at Sha Tin again this weekend as there are many European horses running over the course of the event, particualrly in the Longines Hong Kong Vase. Cirrus De Aigles is one of the favourites in this one and should certainly not be discounted. Although he did not have his best run his last time out, I think it is down to the fact that he ran over too far in that one. He stepped up to run a mile and seven whereas he would usually run over a mile and a half, and he was probably a bit fresh. Considering this I think he ran quite well.
Highland Reel is a versatile horse and Ryan Moore knows how to ride hiom, so he will never be out of the picture, but my pick in this one is Cannock Chase. His last two runs have been really comfortable since stepping up to a mile and a half so I think this race sets up very well for him.
MY PICKs FOR SOUTHWELL
I am looking at the 1.05 in Southwell tomorrow afternoon, I like the look of Grey Mirage in this one. He has won well in Southwell previously, which in my opinion is key as you know they will be able to go on the surface. He was second to Pearl Nation before, but for that race Pearl Nation was carrying only 88, whereas he is now carrying 104. With Grey Mirage off the same mark I think he will have the beating of Pearl Nation in this one, especially when considering that he has had a win in Southwell before.
Later in the day in the 1.40 I have picked Scarborough who is trained by Michael Appleby. This is a horse I have ridden myself before, and is a course and distance winner. She is four years old now, and I think she will be much stronger than when I rode her and it rode very well off two pound higher last time out so I fancy her to do well.
In the 2.15 I have gone for Roger Thorpe which is carrying top weight. I think in those low grade handicaps like 0-60 makes a huge difference. With the horse running off that mark before I think it has enough to win this race.
LOOKING AT THE INTERNATIONAL HURDLE
Finally I turn my attention to Cheltenham and specifically the International Hurdle at 3pm. Peace and Co is a very short priced favourite in this one after winning the Triumph hurdle but I quite like the loko of Old Guard. He is stepping up in class which would mean many might look past him, but his last two wins have been very comfortable and he has got a run this year so he doesn’t have the same freshness as Peace And Co, which I actually think is an advantage. Peace and Co hasn’t run in 274 days which could cause so rust, and because of that I would be reluctant to take him at such a low price.
