NAP-HAPPY NEW-YEAR PROFIT: Daqman, the man who makes his own headlines, landed his nap and made a profit for the second day running when Patriotic (WON 10-11, nap) and Timia (WON 6-4) scored at the duo of Ladbrokes’ Tuesday AW meetings. He hopes for twelfth-night celebrations today after a New Year start with:
WIN 7-2 (Jan 1): First bet of 2016
WIN 7-1 (Jan 2): A top tip on TV
WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN (Jan 3) Four!
WIN (Jan 4): 11-4 in Monday profit
WIN (Jan 5): Nap and profit again
BEST BET IS LET IN LIGHTLY: Daqman tries some outsiders today but is eight-point confident about his nap, let in lightly at Huntingdon, and has some strong Daq Multiples.
HOBBS HOPE NO ‘PHONY’ IN THE HOOD
12.40 Huntingdon Philip Hobbs, currently striking at 50% (five winners from his last 10 runners), has chosen to saddle outsider Antiphony, in first-time hood, from four declared for this.
Other trainers in form here are Ben Pauling (Kingussie) on three out of four, still standing; Fergal O’Brien (Trespassers Will) three out of five; and David Pipe (Still Together) two out of three.
Still Together comes out quickly after tailing off at Exeter; Trespassers Will is bred for chasing and may need more time. Kingussie ran well on his hurdling debut after more than a year off.
Muthabir needs top of the ground but the mud will suit stamina-bred Potters Legend and, if he settles better, may justify the morning price but I’ll bet a pound that the hood works on Antiphony.
1.40 Huntingdon The novices and maidens continue to dominate the card – leaving only two races to experienced horses – and you wouldn’t want to take too short a price about Clemency who has been kept to goodish terrain since her debut defeat in a bumper a year back.
However, it’s a similar story with Alizee Javilex, and the one for the conditions, Grand Turina, is declared a non-runner.
So I’ll chance the Milan mare The Barbury Queen, half-sister to a dual Thyestes Chase winner, and probably the one with the brightest future in this small field. That will be over fences but she should be should be running on at the finish here.
GO WITH THE FLOW FOR WELL-IN NAP
2.10 Huntingdon Harry Fry and Dan Skelton have hit the ground running in their training careers and they clash with two classy types in this, Value At Risk, which Dan has described as ‘very, very, very good’, and Fletchers Flyer.
Both were Graded hurdlers, separated by only 3lb in the ratings, but their chasing careers have started differently, with Value At Risk falling in quality company on the debut.
Fletchers Flyer did much better for starters, runner-up in heavy ground at Exeter, and can be forgiven his fading up the hill on chasing’s main course, Cheltenham. I’ll put the pair in my Daq Multiples.
2.40 Huntingdon Harry Whittington has a 30% strike rate this season and his form figures in the last 10 days are 23231, suggesting that Qasser could be a place bet at the offers. But he’s up 16lb since his Taunton success in November.
Iftiraaq’s 124 also looks a tad harsh, as he’s been beaten since narrowly accounting for a 117 horse at Leicester. Apterix was targeted at the Northumberland Plate until things went wrong in the summer (I shall see how he goes today).
Another Venetia Williams’ mudlark, Tara Flow, tries to get under the handicapper’s radar, well in despite a 7lb penalty, since she goes up 16lb on Saturday for her easy win at Leicester. The stable has had six winners on heavy ground since Boxing Day.
OAKLEY GIRL SHOULD TAKE TO TAPETA
2.00 Chelmsford The 6f-7f winner Exceeding Power got the Chelmsford mile well at his first attempt last time out, and looks a class higher than Southwell scorer Boots And Spurs. Loyalty has dropped to within a pound of his CD win here last Spring, albeit now aged nine.
Assault On Rome didn’t seem to like the sand at Southwell but was a soft-ground winner on turf over this trip in the summer, and the form of Baileys En Premier on today’s course off a sub-70 rating is 111 since last May.
Trainer Chris Dwyer is currently getting all his runners into the first four, and the five-year-old was big at the morning BETDAQ offers for a bit of win and place in an eight-runner field.
2.20 Wolverhampton There are two better-class races on the Tapeta at Wolver. This one is a worry for punting, because there are two trainers with two runners each.
One of them, David Simcock, makes it the more baffling by suggesting that Miss Understood needs further and India’s Song has to be claimed off to nullify a 6lb rise.
Amaze Me plummets four grades from her Group-2 Lancashire Oaks sixth in the summer but the Robyn Brisland yard can only be watched at this early styage. I’ll go with Oakley Girl, who is 2-2 on Polytrack, so clearly likes these man-made surfaces . Her stable has already scored twice in 2016.
2.50 Wolverhampton I suggest sticking with the younger horses, as comparative old-timers of seven, eight and 10 line up here
Off The Pulse, who landed back-to.-back wins on the course at this time last year, looked ready to strike with a return to something like his old form two weeks ago, and Graham Lee returns to the saddle. If only the stable was more reliable (8% strike rate on AW last year).
