WINNING SATURDAY BANKER: DAQMAN’s Saturday BANKER Adrien Du Pont revelled in the heavy ground at Chepstow to win the Grade 1 Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle at 11/8.
DAQMAN SAID: “Adrien Du Pont seems to be one of those to have escaped the ‘Ditcheat lurgy’ and the Nicholls yard was back in decent shape yesterday with a treble”.
TWO DOWN, TWO ACROSS: A quiet Sunday. Ffos Las and Tramore have both been called off leaving two cards across both codes. Southwell AW and jumping at Fairyhouse.
HAPPIER NEW YEAR FOR NICHOLLS
2016 has certainly started better for Paul Nicholls than 2015 ended. The Ditcheat maestro has had six winners from his 15 runners since January 1 including yesterday’s banker Adrien Du Pont who appeared late on the scene to collar long time leader Chic Name in the Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow.
Nick Scholfield always appeared confident on the favourite but Chic Name kicked on entering the straight and the question was whether Adrien Du Pont had the class to peg him back on the heavy ground.
In the end, it was comfortable enough and Adrien Du Pont has now earned himself a 16/1 quote with Ladbrokes for the Triumph Hurdle in March.
DAWN TO GO ONE BETTER IN FAIRYHOUSE FEATURE
2.20 Fairyhouse (Dan Moore Memorial) Sandra Hughes has a couple of interesting runners in the feature including Nearly Nama’d who sprung a 40/1 surprise when winning a Grade B chase over course and distance last time out. The handicapper has given him an extra 7lb as a reward and his jumping, which was far from perfect last time, is likely to come under more pressure in this tougher race.
Stable companion Guitar Pete was a Grade 1 winner over hurdles but is relatively inexperienced over fences. He was only pipped a short head when runner-up in a three runner event at Cork last time out but didn’t really build on that at Punchestown last time out when fifth over 2m 6f. The drop back in trip should help.
The selection though is Bright New Dawn who was runner-up to Mallowney in this last season. He has had two good seconds to his name this season including to Felix Yonger in the Hilly Way Chase at Navan last time out.
FLYING PHILBA FOR FOUR-TIMER
2.40 Southwell (Ladbrokes Handicap) Not a bad class 3 handicap which brings together three last time out winners. Captain Lars did the column a favour when winning at Lingfield on New Years’s Eve and has gone in again since over course and distance here two days later. It was only a claimer but he absolutely relished his first ever try on the Southwell surface winning by seven lengths and it could have been ‘any’ lengths.
Zaeem is another who won well last time out but has a big 10lb extra to carry in the weights so a repeat of his five length romp looks unlikely.
Philba might be up for a Southwell four-timer. Mick Appleby won this race last year and Philba could follow up. He is up 6lb for a narrow win last time out but it did at least come at this level whereas his main rivals today are generally taking a big step up in class.
JACOB’S LOOKS A CRACKER OF A NAP
The 3.10 at Southwell – the six furlong seller – looks a match on paper between Jacob’s Pillow and Abi Scarlett who won the race last year.
Preference though this time has to go to Jacob’s Pillow who had today’s chief rival around five lengths in arrears when they met over course and distance in December. Jacob’s Pillow is actually better in at the weights here too and qualifies as my nap of the day.
