WILLIE MULLINS ESHER BOUND: Willie Mullins has his eyes on another big weekend UK race – this time the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown Park on Saturday.
Willie Mullins – champion British trainer as well as champion Irish trainer ?? It’s a big possibility and obviously will revolve largely around the Festival.
Mullins bids to become the first trainer to be champion both sides of the Irish Sea since Aidan O’Brien on the flat in 2008.
He is certainly targeting the big Saturday races in the UK with increased ammunition. A case in point being the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown Park on Saturday where he has FIVE of the 14 five-day runners entered.
Mullins won the race last year with Gitane Du Berlais when there were only five runners and the race is likely to reduce considerably in size again.
Most notably More Of That is set to miss the race. A former winner of the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, More Of That has had two easy wins over fences but regular pilot Barry Geraghty is likely to be claimed to ride at Leopardstown and trainer Jonjo O’Neill said in this case he’s an unlikely starter.
The Mullins’ quintet are Black Hercules, McKinley, Outlander, Pleasant Company and Pont Alexandre.
Tea For Two will be a formidable rival for them all though if he runs. He was impressive when winning the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day giving Lizzie Kelly a first ever Grade 1 success for a female rider.
