IRISH GOLD CUP DAY AT LEOPARDSTOWN: One of four Grade 1 races on the superb card underway at 12.55.
It’s a jumping bonanza at Leopardstown this afternoon with a quartet of Grade 1 races on the card including the Irish Gold Cup.
Racing gets underway at 12.55pm on soft ground.
12:55 GAIN Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo, Class 1, 2m, 8 runners)
Ivanovich Gorbatov went to the top of the Triumph Hurdle ante-post list when winning over course and distance in December and should consolidate that position with another win here. Aidan O’Brien’s runner won two of his three races on the flat and was quite impressive on hurdling debut when beating the odds-on Willie Mullins shot Let’s Dance who re-opposes today. There are no obvious reasons why that form should not hold up today. Jer’s Girl was only beaten a head in a Grade 2 over course and distance at Christmas and can stay on for a place.
1:55 Deloitte Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 2f, 5 runners)
Willie Mullins has won this for the past three seasons and has three of the five runners today as he attempts to extend the sequence. The selection has to be Bellshill who is on a winning run of four including at Grade 1 level last time out at Naas. Tombstone ran a belter here over Christmas in the Future Champions Novice Hurdle and is the obvious danger.
2:30 Flogas Novice Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 5f 60y, 6 runners)
Zabana may halt the Mullins bandwagon. He has plenty of class as he proved when finishing runner-up in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham and went on to finish third to Jezki at Punchestown. He impressed on his chasing debut here and looks the value play in the race.
3:40 Irish Gold Cup (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 3m 60y, 10 runners)
What odds a Gigginstown 1-2-3 ??? Not particularly huge I’d say as they hold the aces in the Gold Cup pack here. Road To Riches is undoubtedly the class act in the race – he was third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup to Coneygree last season and occupied the same position behind Don Cossack at Punchestown. He justified odds-on favouritism to win the Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase on reappearance and this looks his for the taking.
