SOLL BET TODAY BUT HE’S IN AINTREE LIMBO

1.20 Kelso Gordon Elliott, in great form (currently 21211) and with a winner on his latest English raid – to Musselburgh – has five runners at Clonmel today but books Richard Johnson for Water Sprite in this Scottish Borders event, though it was at Clonmel that the five-year-old got off the mark two weeks back.

It’s a surprise to see the 2m 3f winner, Western Rules, dropped back to the minimum. Both he and Road To Gold have to give 7lb to the selection.

2.30 Kelso Nicky Henderson is six out of nine at Kelso, and Top Notch (2.30) looks like the hub for Daq Multiples trebles

3.05 Kelso (Ivan Straker Memorial) The first time I was Press-partying with Ivan Straker, he had his arm in a sling. My inquiry didn’t need words just the body language of the raised eyebrow? ‘Oh this,’ he laughed. ‘I got it limbo dancing.’ Ask a silly question..!

It was that inexplicable quirk of fate that also opened the door for him to have a horse in his ownership called Seagram to win the Seagram Grand National, when his whisky company saved the race.

It did win. But he’d twice failed to buy when it was offered to him, and his other attempts to win the race ended in limbo.

Gone are the days when I could quaff Glenlivet with my cornflakes, so just an English Breakfast toast to a racing-mad Scotsman, and a pity only four turn out in his honour today. But at least there are three that are engaged in the National.

Unioniste was well backed at 16-1 when he fell last year. Corrin Wood pulled up. Neither has done much to redeem himself since. And Soll’s Aintree chances have probably gone; he’s already finished seventh (2013) and ninth (2015), and looks one of those National nearly horses.

But the two previous Ivan Straker winners, 2014 festival handicap scorer Holywell and 2011 Gold Cup hero Long Run, are key players in this year’s Aintree big race.

3.55 Leicester I’m going to cover my options today, since the going descriptions are a yankee of ‘heavy’ for all jumping in England and Ireland.

With Paul Nicholls showing some form now at the lower levels, I’m taking Stiletto to make up for his Wincanton blunder when going really strongly.

Prideofthecastle won first run back from a two-year absence and qualifies for the ‘bounce’ factor; 15 days is not normally enough, mentally, to keep that peak.

As for me, mentally, I’m not into P Nicholls these days – with that distinct smell of burning coming from my Cheltenham wallet (see Tuesday’s ante-post review) – but, if I put Unioniste in my multiples with Stiletto, Ditcheat can surely make one of them count.
