EURO 2016 SATURDAY: Down to the last 16 and it’s reached the knock-out stage. Three matches on Saturday ….. 2pm Switzerland v Poland, 5pm Wales v Northern Ireland and 8pm Croatia v Portugal. We preview all three games.
Switzerland v Poland
2pm Two solid teams here and a very open market with Switzerland 3.3, Poland 2.72 and the draw trading 3.0 at the time of writing. Both sides finished second in the group stage without losing a game, indeed Poland didn’t even concede a goal and that’s what we believe will be the difference here. The game screams unders on the goals front, however under 2.5 is trading at 1.46 which we feel is a shade short for backing.
We expected a cagey game here to open the Last 16, but Poland draw-no-draw appeals at around the 1.82 mark as the best option – their solid defense should set the tone and we feel they have more attacking options than this Switzerland side.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Poland draw-no-bet to beat Switzerland at 1.82.
Some Switzerland v Poland facts:
- Switzerland have only won one of their ten games against Poland, and that 40 years ago.
- Switzerland failed to have a single shot on target in their last group game.
- Poland have never scored more than one goal in their European Championship games thus far.

Wales v Northern Ireland
5pm Not many would have expected this clash in the Last 16! But a great occasion to look forward to – Wales have been very good so far and it’s slightly surprising to see them at odds against here, they were joint top scorers of the Group stages and they should be able to out-class this Northern Irish side, who themselves have been very solid, but at the odds we can’t resist the 2.08 on Wales.
While it was nice to see Northern Ireland win a game, Ukraine were woeful in the tournament and lost all three of their games without scoring, they didn’t offer much at all going forward. Surely Bale and co can test the Northern Ireland defence more and ultimately break it down in the end and go on to win.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Wales to beat Northern Ireland at 2.08.
Some Wales v Northern Ireland facts:
- Northern Ireland are without a win in the last eight meetings with Wales.
- Wales were joint top scorers in the Group Stages.
- Northern Ireland only managed one shot on target in the Group Stages outside of their game with Ukraine.
- Northern Ireland have recorded the lowest average possession of Euro 2016 so far with 28.5%.

Croatia v Portugal 8-00
8pm After their rollercoaster of a match against Hungary, Portugal now meet arguably one of the most impressive teams to date in Euro 2016 – Croatia have played some superb football and were rewarded with a surprise win against Spain in their last group game to finish top of Group D. Much like the Switzerland v Poland game earlier, the match odds market is very open again here with Croatia 2.74, Portugal 3.15 and the draw 3.1 at the time of writing.
Although you can never write off Portugal, such is their talent, they can’t really be relied upon as we have seen in the group stages – they dominated the first two games without scoring while conceding three to Hungary has to be a worry. If Croatia play like they have done for most of the tournament so far they should have the beating of Portugal in a close game. We like the draw-no-bet price at 1.86.
BETDAQ BEST BET:
Croatia draw-no-bet to beat Portugal at 1.86.
Some Croatia v Portugal facts:
- Croatia are unbeaten in their last ten Internationals.
- Croatia have only failed to score once in their last 12 European Championship games.
- Portugal are unbeaten in their last ten competitive games.
- Ronaldo has now attempted 40 direct freekicks at major tournaments with Portugal and is yet to score.
