‘SEE HOW THEY WON’ BIG-RACE GUIDE
Where do the winners come from? Starting with Saturday’s Celebration Mile at Goodwood, there are huge profits to be had in the big autumn races.
September starts with the English St Leger at Doncaster and the Irish Champion Stakes meeting at Leopardstown, followed by a huge Irish St Leger day at The Curragh
It ends with the Newmarket Cambridgeshire meeting; then the season still has the Cesarewitch, the Arc de Triomphe and British Champions Day (October 15). So don’t go away!
Last year Daqman had BOTH English and Irish St Leger winners in September and 10 winning naps out of 11 in October. The year before he had six naps out of seven in October and the 10-1 Cesarewitch winner.

* 100 WINNERS ON THE CARDS In his quest for big-race winners, Daqman has a running battle with Pricewise of the Racing Post. Daqman currently leads Pricewise 68-30 for the Flat season, so you can expect the match to produce 100 winners this coming weekend. Again, don’t go away, folks!
CHURCHILL STEPS INTO THE GUINEAS PICTURE
The race may have been robbed of some of its intrigue with the withdrawal of Capri but Churchill confirmed his position as one of Ireland’s top two-year-olds by comfortably taking the Futurity Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday and next year’s 2000 Guineas looks to be firmly on his agenda. He formed the first part of a Group 2 double for Aidan O’Brien and Seamus Heffernan that was completed by Rhododendron in the Debutante Stakes. She was made to work hard by stablemate Hydrangea but ultimately had too much at the line. The Moyglare Stud Stakes will likely be her next target and she even at this very early stage looks an Oaks type in the making.
It didn’t all go Ballydoyle’s way on Sunday however, as warm favourite US Army Ranger was no match for Success Days (14.9 XSP) in the Royal Whip Stakes. He made eye-catching headway on the turn into the straight before tiring late on and in truth connections are probably not too disappointed with that comeback run with bigger targets in mind later this season. The same can be said of Fascinating Rock who produced a bold show conceding a Group 1 penalty to all in the race.
The winner, Success Days, finally reproduced the level of form that he showed early in his three-year-old season and will be a tough nut to crack in Grade 2/3 company when there is dig in the ground.
BACK EYESHINE TO BEAT THE MONDAY BLUES
Brighton 3.00 – Goodwood Crusader caught the eye when flashing home last time after being quite badly hampered earlier in the race. He enters nursery company for the first time today and the slight increase in trip should be a help to him. Trainer Richard Hughes has been going well this season and he boasts a 27% strike rate at Brighton this season.
Carlisle 5.15– Supporters of Cartwright at a shade of odds-on were made to sweat at Lingfield last time but Luke Morris summoned a telling effort in the final 100 yards to win a shade cosily at the line. He has been given an additional 6lbs for that win but the extra furlong should be in his favour here and he looks a type that is still learning on the job which will help keep him ahead of the handicapper.
Kempton 7.50 – Very significant that Frankie Dettori makes his way to Kempton for just the one ride this evening and Eyeshine should prove very tough to beat. Dettori and Gosden boast a 23% strike rate when teaming up this season and this filly showed plenty finishing second last time behind a smart sort.
Thirsk 8.05 – Mango Chutney was a winner over course and distance on his penultimate start and was in the process of running a big race when slipping 3 furlongs out. He managed to regain his composure to finish third that day but looks to still have prospects from this mark of 60 given a clear passage. It is also worth noting that his trainer John Davies has a level stakes profit of +43.50 at Thirsk over the last 5 seasons.
