PLAY UP YOUR SUPER-FILLY WINNINGS! The third in Daqman’s series, Inside Betting Circles, has been held over until tomorrow with the news today that his 25-1 (BETDAQ) Epsom Oaks winner is likely to run in Saturday’s King George at Ascot. Daqman has been on the super filly three times: at Chester, Epsom (Oaks) and the Curragh (Irish Oaks). Will he play up his winnings? He sure will.
TWO OUT OF THREE INCLUDES THE NAP: Daqman was himself in top gear yesterday with two winners out of three, his nap, Regulator (WON 4-5) and then the gambled-on Atletico (WON 8-11) last night.
ENABLE QUEEN OF THE KING GEORGE
The King George will enable us another banker pay-day. I declare that right now, with the news that John Gosden is likely to run his super filly in Saturday’s big Ascot feature.
This column was first on the Enable bandwagon. It was a lonely place when she was a 25-1 shot on BETDAQ ante-post for the Epsom Oaks.
But I was impressed with her Cheshire Oaks success. Saw that, after she surged to the front, she quickened again when just a nudge of the knee from Frankie Dettori extended her further, yet she was clearly nowhere near her highest gear.
I knew that a daughter of Nathaniel was likely to mature suddenly, as he did. Though Enable won her Chester prep, Nathaniel was beaten in the Chester Vase before landing a powerful Ascot double.
He won the ‘Ascot Derby’ (King Edward V11 Stakes) five lengths and then took the King George of 2011 five weeks later.
Enable has also been unstoppable since Chester. She won the Epsom Oaks five lengths, bursting the Rhododendron bubble and then the Irish version at the Curragh by even further.
I shall research my usual ABC guide to the King George before Saturday but my current ratings (published last week) speak for themselves, bearing in mind that, as a three-year-old filly, Enable will carry a stone less than Highland Reel on Saturday. My current top six:
120* ENABLE King George, Saturday; Yorkshire Oaks, August 24; Arc De Triomphe, October 1
118* BARNEY ROY Juddmonte International, August 23
118 RIBCHESTER Sussex Stakes, August 2
118* ULYSSES King George, Saturday, or Juddmonte International, August 23
116 CAPRI Curragh Irish St Leger Trial, August 19, or Great Voltigeur, August 23
116* HIGHLAND REEL (123) King George, Saturday
* Fortune Cookies
GOLDEN HIGHWAY AT FFOS LAS
3.00 Ffos Las It’s good to soft at Ffos Las and that could be pivotal for the George Baker trained filly Highway One.
She’s the least experienced in the field for this 7f event but proved at Newbury how much she loved the cut in the ground when chasing home Almoreb in a maiden.
The winner from that race has gone on to run well enough twice since at Sandown and the third Top Mission was a winner at Chelmsford next time out.
The mile looked too far for Highway One at Newbury last time out when she finished eighth in a mile event but only started dropping away in the closing stages and it was quicker ground too that day.
She starts life in handicap company on a competitive mark and whilst trainer George Baker has had just one winner from the last 12 his runners that have started at less than 10/1 have been running well.
She’s 7.0 on BETDAQ and that looks a solid win and place project.
3.15 Musselburgh 12-year-old Silvanus notched up a 17th career win here last time out getting home by a neck in a race that fell his way. The resulting 3lb may anchor him.
Royal Brave was a good third at Ayr yesterday and is still a runner today at the time of writing. He just holds Silvanus on a form line from May but it came in a race where the old boy met trouble in running and he could easily power past Royal Brave today – especially if that one is showing any after effects from two runs in as many days.
Pearl Acclaim is the interesting one. He’s been knocking on the door for a while now and dropped a further 3lb could see him gain his first win since a course and distance success in June 2015.
6.30 Chelmsford Amazing Alice is being kept busy by trainer Archie Watson but is clearly thriving on it and seems a much better horse on the all-weather than the turf.
She has had back to back wins here at Chelmsford (winning by seven lengths) and then defying a penalty to win in good style at Wolverhampton. I don’t think the winning run is over.
There are question marks about her rivals today. Bomad was a 100/1 runner-up at Doncaster and tries the AW for the first time, Green Fortune was a little disappointing when favourite last time and the cheekpieces go on tonight which leaves Kevin Ryan’s Stormbringer as the main danger after his debut third at Ayr.
